I blame the French. They change the name of Spanish and Italian cities and then English adopts the French spelling - Seville, Florence, et al.
I'd been thinking about that one since this started, and I'd bet Kyle who's probably getting about by train, because it's easy and sensible is really concious of having to switch back and forth if he even bothers. We gave up on the english language maps pretty quickly. Bought a major German atlas, and stocked up on local stuff every trip. Got a drawer full of Stadtplan. It really is easier that way, or at least it was for us. Now I really have to think to anglicize a lot of the names to people here. Koln could be tough to get without any other clues. Bill C

Yes, they are rather useless around here. I've been getting by mostly by guessing; after all, with a little imagination city names really aren't significantly different sounding from each other in other languages (Monaco di Baviera notwithstanding). Maylan, for example, or Chania.

I just buy that big Thomas Cooke schedule for trains. Besides being very informative, it makes a pretty fair pillow.
