Then boom, a close friend of mine had it done and is now 5 months out with serious vision problems. She will never see the same it appears. She's completely blurred past a few feet. Terrified the [censored] out of me and has me ruling out Lasik again. Vision is just one thing I won't mess with, even at the tiny 1 in 10,000 Lasik failure rate, or whatever it is.

Life is full of risks, but your cumulative odds of something bad happening are probably much worse when you're riding your bike down the road than when you elect to have LASIK.
FWIW, most post-op LASIK problems can be resolved with a follow-up procedure. Did your close friend use an experienced professional, or did she go for the $399/eye "Introductory Special" advertised in the local newspaper? What is the nature of her vision problem?

Then boom, a close friend of mine had it done and is now 5 months out with serious vision problems. She will never see the same it appears. She's completely blurred past a few feet. I have always had the same fear-even though my own son had Lasik and it went fine. For years my opthalmologist joked with me that when I got older I would get cataracts and have lens implants. Well, that happened. After 50 years of glasses-most of that time really thick ones- I now have 20/25 vision. Anyway, not reccomending it for anyone else but this is a pretty proven technology with a very high success rate.
What you actually want, is the doctor who has actually performed the most proceedures, yet still has a low complication ratio. The more they've done it, the more confident that are in doing it. In many cases, the guys who charge less money are the ones who have gotten fast enough because they are so damn experienced at doing it. Do your research.

I had it done 4 years ago, and could not be happier with the outcome and the freedom from glasses and contacts (both of which I had worn for many years). That said, it is a medical procedure that involves your eyes, so if you're interested, do your research and find a good doc (hint: it's probably not the guy advertising $399/eye in the local classifieds).

Rudy Project makes some awesome Rx shades, single lens w/o the annoying insert (which I have also used). I got a deal on the frames, but they are a little pricey when the Rx lenses are included. But they are worth it. I have the Rudy Ekynox SX, w/ the blue lens and they rock for good-light days, but are a little dark for rainy days or at dawn/ dusk.

When you are of a certain age, bi-focal contacts and Rudys are quite nice. :-)

The thing with Lasik is that YOU get it in both eyes.
