I have been recently perusing the medical liturature and I am convinced that CLA is worth me trying as a supplement to my low fat, dairy and red meat free normal diet. This is the best deal on CLA I have found so far. Does anyone have any more economical a suggestion?

Low fat worked really well for me when I was young. I tried low carb and got weak and sick. My diet isn't terribly high carb to begin with some brown rice, cabbage, yams and fruit. Anyway, I really am not convinced that most of low carb loss is not waters of hydration loss associated with glycogen depletion. I know this has been argued about a lot here and I have read some of the arguements and literature and I just don't find the evidence convincing. I am willing to concede that low carb might work very well for some people, but it just really doesn't feel right to me.

Things change when you get older. One of those things tends to be increased insulin resistance.

By the same token, you shouldn't become too attached to the "hippie health food" approach. Your descriptions of what you eat tend to imply that. Depending on how much and what type of fruit you eat, you could be getting a lot of sugar.
