Good Sunglass Suggestions

Rudy Project rydon's or ketyum. Lotsa good options though, lotsa options.... But getting a frame that you can easily swith from darker to lighter lenses is important if you're riding in differing conditions.

I have Rudy Rydons mainly for the RX adaptors for prescription lensing.

Otherwise i would have gone for Euro brand with interchangeable lenses. Had them before the Rudys and they are fantastic value for money.

The Rydons are a great sunglass though.

Ditto the Rudy Rydons...and with a couple of extra lenses for low light conditions too. I really like the way that they can be adjusted for a custom fit of your face. That is really nice when time trialing. The top of frame doesn't block your view of the road. The optics are as good if not better than Oakleys so there is no trade off there either.

Go out and try lots of them on--Rudy, Oakley, Briko, Smith, etc, etc. There are tons of options and a lot of it can be left up to style and how they fit your face. Similar to a helmet, some glasses may be too big for your face or too small. Like others said though, interchangeable lenses are a very good thing. Also, the more coverage the better (in most cases).

I agree with the previous post. I have a set of Oakley M-frames and they work out fine. They provide good wind and glare protection, are light and come with interchangeable lenses and fit well over my helmet straps. 😎

My preference is Wal-Mart. $9.99 or less, and I'm good to go.

I know it sounds weird, but for my entire life, whenever I've spent money on decent sunglasses, something awful happens to them. They either get sat on, lost, or dropped - and when I drop a pair of sunglasses, they always, ALWAYS fall lenses-down onto something that scratches the hell out of them.

Now, if I buy a [censored] pair of sunglasses at Wal-Mart or a sporting goods store, I'll have those for 3 years without a scratch. I'll never sit on them or lose them. It's really strange.

You never think you have a strangely shaped head until you start shopping for sunglasses. Models that look great on the page, and great on others, make me look like a circus escapee in stolen shades. Or a fish. Or an alien. I can go to a store and try out dozens.

When I find one that doesn't look alarming on my face, I tend to buy it.

After pairs of Oakley, Rudy Project, and Ray Ban, I've finally found the perfect shades for me. Lense swapping just wasn't working. Either left the lenses at home or hood of my car.... doh! Or got them smeared with sweaty fingerprints all over them. And I hated having to stop and fidget with the lenses in the middle of a ride. More than once I've accidentally dropped a lense on the side of the road..... grrrr

So, I finally started looking for light adjusting lenses. Like the old polarized lenses... but hopefully better. I only found two companies that make them with sporting activities in mind. One is more for motorcycles and the other is made by Specialized.

WileyX makes the motorcycle shades and they even come with a gasket attachment that makes the sunglasses fit more like goggles. Nice shades too!.... But I had two issues with them. First, the lense's lightest color was clear (I really wanted a very low vis color of either yellow or amber, like my Rudy Project shades). Second, the pair that best fit my big head, was $40 more expensive than the Specialized sunglasses... OUCH.

Specialized makes both an amber and a yellow tinted lense. Both lense colors also come in two frame sizes. The amber lenses are supposed to be the 'road lenses' and the yellow lenses the 'trail lense'. My LBS let me try out a pair of the large trail lenses. These actually fit very well and they worked as advertised! After the ride, I bought a pair of the large frames.. (I never, ever thought I'd drop over $100 for sunglasses again).

I always find myself finishing my rides at dusk, so I went with the yellow lenses.... This time, I didn't even notice how dark it was getting. Not being able to see, never even came to mind..... until it really was dark! I was a bit worried the yellow lenses would not get dark enough in full sun, but they did. I've worn them on several rides where it started out sunny and ended up very cloudy, the tint changed so slightly that I never thought they were too dark or too light. For me, these shades are working out better than expected. Obviously, I cannot recommend them enough. You can check them out at the Specialized site under Optics. www.specialized.com

One small nitpick that I have, is the frame earpieces are 'triangular shaped', not flat, and this causes some fitting issues with the mirror I use. But if it starts to bother me more.... I'll be getting a new mirror! 😄

I second Specialized. I thought about it for a LONG time before purchasing something outside the regular pair I use for driving etc.

I really like not having to change (or keep up with) different lenses, etc. Wind protection, venting, etc. seems to work out real well....and for the first time since I started riding, I'm not constantly pushing them back into position..they stay where you put them.

In fact, you almost forget they're there.. which is about the best compliment I can give them.

I got a pair of Rudy Project Graal Fyols for cost from a dealer and I love them. They are light, easy to change the lenses, come with a baggy, case and three sets of lenses. They have good coverage but are not huge and I don't look like a tool wearing them away from cycling.
