GPS and IGN Maps

Hi I had the same problem and found the answear in a book
that cotswold sell, GPS Made Easy ISBN 1-871890-89-6 about
£11.00 or so. This explains the UTM coordinate system and
how the world is split into sections. My Garmin can be set
to use and display UTM coordinates and these are marked on
the edges of IGN maps like the Ordance Survey coordinates
are on UK maps.

You need to have a GPS set that can cope with WGS84 which
AFAIK is all of them, and you need the appropriate maps in
France. You can use the old maps as they are marked with
lat/long but look for the new ones that have a "GPS" flash
on the cover.

French 1:25000 and 1:50000 maps are reasonably good quality
but a little pricey. They fall apart when wet though even
more than the OS ones do.

The more recent of the IGN 1:25,000 maps do have a GPS grid.
The maps are labelled 'TOP25'.

All of France is available on CD-ROMs at 1:25,000 too, you
might like to have a look at:

At Euro 37.90 per CD these look like good value. They work
with GPSs and each CD seems to cover about half of a
département. I wish we had something similar here, this is
my really big grouse with the OS.

AIUI all the IGN 25k maps are now "Compatible GPS" and are
complete with a UTM grid and WGS84 datum.

AFAIK the 50k maps in eg the Carte de Randonees Pyrenees
maps are still based on the Lambert grid and so are not very
easy to use with a GPS, requiring either that you draw your
own grid or else shag about with the user grid on your GPS.

As an alternative to the IGN 50k maps the Institute
Cartographic de Catalunya (ICC) do some 50k maps of the
Pyrenees region, covering both France and Spain which are
compatible with GPS. These are drawn with a UTM grid and the
ED50 datum.

The ICC maps I was referring to are the Pyrenees maps 20
through 25 and they cover approximately half-and-half
France/Spain with a bias towards Spain in most cases.

I think you must mean the others in the series (Nos 1
through 11) ? Recent editions of these are cropped tight on
the border and have map key info in place that would
otherwise cover useful areas in Spain.
