  1. Just tried to place a $50 bid on a brand new Trek Maldone 5.9 (in my
size) being sold via some US seller on eBay, its been sitting there for
days with no bids. The auction had about 4 hours left to run, but when
I placed the bid the item was no longer available. Its almost as if
the act of bidding caused the entry to be deleted...

Does this sort of thing happen a lot on eBay?

Almost had me a nice bargain. 🙂

    (RRP $8,499)

I think ebay just saved you from a scam.

some things are just to good to be true and if you see things like that they usually are not believeable, I tend to only place bids on things being sold by Power Sellers, or at least sellers with a fairly good history.

If I saw something like that I would watch it only.... and probably not place a bid.

Yes, lots. It's called a scam. They're funny when they use a stock web
photo. It's even funnier when you can clearly see they've taken the pic
through their local bike shop's window! If you watch for them long enough
you see the same bikes and same photos being used again, and again....

err.. you almost lost your $50 :-)

Always check to see what the seller has previously bought and sold. If
someone's been selling/buying perfume and babies clothes, and suddenly
branches out into high-end 'bargain' bikes, it's probably some poor sucker
    whose account has been stolen!

Yep, it appears to be the latter. Other cheap bikes appeared on which
I placed bids and within a few hours got an alert from ebay that the
items I was bidding on had been withdrawn due to the account being
    "compromised".

    Oh well... 🙂
