Groups rarely include the seatpost. Sometimes they don't
include the hubs or headset either. Just ask the shop what
they're selling.

Over the years this has changed from complete meaning
everything but spokes and handlebar tape to just the
component parts.

Sorry but it's up to you to ask and to specify dimensions.

"Groups", or their badly spelled variants, may or may not
include headset, hubs, seatpost, etc etc and the prices vary
accordingly.

If you specified 27.2 diameter and he agreed, then I agree
you'd have a beef.

Did you specify crank length, number of holes in the front
hub, ditto rear hub, nine or ten speeds, cassette size,
chainrings front changer clamp size ( or BZ) and threading?
If you did all that but didn't specify seatpost diameter
then maybe he assumed you were using a frame with a
proprietary seatpost. Dunno.

For example because of boxed wheels, many oem kits are
supplied without hubs now, so a new "group less hubs" item
is created from the diverted equipment.

I wonder, did it include the new Campagnolo carbon bottle
cage? Just because Campagnolo makes it doesn't mean every
kit has one. You need to be explicit.

Most groups these days do not come with seatpost, pedals and
sometimes no headset.

What's included, and not included, has changed over the
years. Best bet is to ask what is included in the price and
not assumed parts are included that might not be.

the Swedish cycling newsgruppo. (I am English and I live
in Sweden).

A poster is complaining that a shop is selling a record
group with a seat post as an extra for $120. He thinks that
the seat post should be in the group as standard. My own
feeling is that he is wrong to criticize the shop but I
wanted to find out what is acceptable in other places before
my own posting.

Campi seat posts IN PARTICULAR aren't included because
they're so darned expensive. In order to try and maintain a
reasonable look of the "group" price they've been removing
components for years. Now a group doesn't include the
seatpost, the headset and the bottom bracket. Some don't
include hubs.

But LOOK at the complexity of the components they do supply
these days.

There must be 50 parts inside those Ergo levers.

The rear derailleur can last the life of the bike.

The front derailleur has a dozen little detail bends in it
that allow it to shift just right without over-shifting but
also they are quiet over wide ranges.

Cranks are quite complex now with pickup pins and certain
teeth flattened to down shift faster.

None of this stuff comes free. The machining processes are
very complex and the results are pretty phenomenal.

Now, older (good) stuff wasn't bad, but the new stuff is so
much better that it is really amazing that they can get it
to work so nearly perfect.
