Half a MM make any difference?

  1. I'd like to swap a 52-42-30 105 crank out for either a Sugino XD600/XD300
    46-36-26 square taper or the Nashbar Trekker 48-38-28 ISIS.

    The bike, a Trek 520, came factory with a 68/118.5mm BB. Hardly anything is
    available in a square taper and nothing that I can find in an ISIS, but
    plenty of 118mm available. Will my chainline change much by the BB being off
    ..5 of a milimeter?

    If you were using the same crank and just using different BB's, no.

    However, since you're changing cranks, you'll need to use the
    appropriate BB. Some "low-profile" cranks require 110mm BB's. It
    appears the Sugino cranks use 118mm BB's

    bolt right on.

    It'll change more by using a 118. The XD cranks call for a 113, and I've
    heard of people successfully using a 107 with it.. The spindle length is
    determined by the crank, not the frame.

    On the bright side, there are lots and lots and lots of reasonably good,
    cheap 113 square taper BBs out there.

    And definitely get the Sugino. Best crank deal in the universe.

    118 is only if you have a 73mm shell. 68mm should use a 113.

    118 is only if you have a 73mm shell. 68mm should use a 113.

    The 105 crank has a 68 x 188.5 Octalink V1, so with XD I'll try the 68 x
    113.

    Why don't you just put a 24, 26, or 28 tooth 74mm bcd inner chainring
    on the bike? $10-$15 and 5 minutes and you are done. That is what I
    did back in 1992 when I bought a Trek 520. Worked very well for many,
    many years. Eventually went to a 20 tooth inner ring. You have bar
    end shifters on the Trek 520 so there is no problems like STI has with
    small inner chainrings.

    I doubt that you could measure the difference repeatably. But then,
    there's a good chance that two nominally same-size BBs from different
    sources would produce more of a variance than .5mm anyway.

    Slap it in, check your sprocket and crank arm clearances at the stays,
    and ride.

    130/94 and I understand a 30 tooth is as small as you can go.

    You need to get yourself to a competent bike shop soon before you blow
    all your money. Your Shimano 105 crankset has a 130mm bcd for the two
    outer chainrings and 74mm bcd for the inner chainring. You can put as
    low as a 24 tooth inner chainring on a 74mm bcd crank. You can go as
    low as a 38 tooth chainring for either of the two outer rings. Only
    the Shimano Dura Ace triple crankset has a goofy inner chainring size
    of 92mm bcd or something. It only goes down to 30 tooth. Only Dura
    Ace has this, not Ultegra or 105 or anything else on earth.

    Yes my crank was a 110/74. It takes the exact same size inner
    chainrings as a 130/74 crankset. The Sugino mentioned by the internet
    bicyclists also is a 110/74. It takes the exact same size inner
    chainring as your current Shimano 105.

    bike and be done with it. Don't blow your money on a crankset that you

    do know a 52x13 is an easier gear than a 46x11? The 46 is the top ring
    on the Sugino cranks mentioned on this forum. 13 is your third cog on
    your 11-32 cassette.

    Some more good advice. But a $13 26 tooth cog from Nashbar. 74mm bcd.
    Put it on your Shimano 105 crankset. So you have 52-42-26. Also buy
    from Nashbar a Shimano 105 9 speed cassette. $30 for a 13-23. It will
    have loose cogs held together by three bolts. Take the bolts out. You
    don't need them. Take off your current 11-32 9 speed cassette on your
    Trek 520. Combine the 13-23 cassette and the 11-32 cassette and get a
    new cassette going from 13 to 32. You will have more usable and lower
    high gears with your 52-42-26 than if you waste money on the Sugino
    46-36-26 crank and keep your current 11-32 cassette. Its the
    combination of the big ring and the small cog and the wheel diameter
    that determines your gear. 46x11 is higher than 52x13. Nashbar has a
    10% off coupon code going now. So for less than $40, not including
    shipping, you will have lower lows and lower highs and better spaced
    cogs on your 9 speed Trek 520. Far superior to wasting money on a
    Sugino crankset.

    As stated, got an 11-34 already and a 46-48 will be more useful than a 52.
    Further, the original thread "Pins and Ramps," explained how I was trying to
    keep the crankset "pinned and ramped" because I've got STI shifters on this
    520.

    Yes and no. A given manufacturer's recommended BB width may not work
    with some frames. For example, an old crank (sugino?) that I had which
    called for a 113 spindle shifted great on my steel frame, but wouldn't
    shift down to the small ring worth a toot with the same BB when I
    swapped it over to my wife's aluminum frame - seat tube was, relatively
    speaking, too fat. Once I picked up some cheapy 115 BB, it worked like
    a charm (again).

    Yes 52x11 is useless. But you can just not use the 52x11. Use your
    52x13 as your highest gear. An excellent high gear. Instead of a 27
    speed bike, you have a 26 speed bike. And a 42 tooth chainring which
    is an excellent size chainring.

    And to get back to a 27 speed bike, you can very simply buy a Shimano 9
    speed cassette beginning with a 13 cog, such as a 13-23 Shimano 105
    cogset for $30 from Nashbar. Use the 13-14 from the 13-23 cassette to
    substitute for the 11-13 on your current 11-34 cassette and you have a
    very useful touring cogset of 13-14-15-17-20-23-26-30-34. 52-42
    chainrings will work very well with this cassette.

    And the cost will be much cheaper and the work much easier than buying
    a new Sugino crankset and square taper bottom bracket. $13 for 26
    inner chainring from Nashbar and $30 for Shimano 105 9 speed cogset
    from Nashbar. You can find the inner chainring much cheaper from
    Cambria Bike Outfitters. And when the cassette wears out, the 13-14
    can be used on the next 11-34 cassette you buy since the small cogs are
    not used very often and last much longer than the middle cogs. So the
    $30 and $13 costs are pretty much one time expenses for the life of the
    bike.

    You need to get yourself to a competent bike shop soon before you blow
    all your money. Your Shimano 105 crankset has a 130mm bcd for the two
    outer chainrings and 74mm bcd for the inner chainring. You can put as
    low as a 24 tooth inner chainring on a 74mm bcd crank. You can go as
    low as a 38 tooth chainring for either of the two outer rings. Only
    the Shimano Dura Ace triple crankset has a goofy inner chainring size
    of 92mm bcd or something. It only goes down to 30 tooth. Only Dura
    Ace has this, not Ultegra or 105 or anything else on earth.

    52 will at least throw out the 11 for top end use.

    Yes 52x11 is useless. But you can just not use the 52x11. Use your
    52x13 as your highest gear. An excellent high gear. Instead of a 27
    speed bike, you have a 26 speed bike. And a 42 tooth chainring which
    is an excellent size chainring.

    And to get back to a 27 speed bike, you can very simply buy a Shimano 9
    speed cassette beginning with a 13 cog, such as a 13-23 Shimano 105
    cogset for $30 from Nashbar. Use the 13-14 from the 13-23 cassette to
    substitute for the 11-13 on your current 11-34 cassette and you have a
    very useful touring cogset of 13-14-15-17-20-23-26-30-34. 52-42
    chainrings will work very well with this cassette.

    The current 11-34 cogs are mounted in an alloy spyder, so they are not full
    size and can't be stacked.

    But that is just it, you do get the exact gears you want, actually more
    usable gears, by changing the cassette to a 13-34, by mixing up a 13-23
    9 speed cassette and 11-34 cassette. You can find both cassettes on
    sale for about $50-60 total. And a smaller 26 tooth inner chainring
    for $5-10. Cambria Bike Outfitters has the 26 tooth inner chainring
    for $5. Probably OK deals on the lower priced Shimano 9 speed
    cassettes with all loose cogs and spacers. And of course you keep the
    Shimano 105 crank with pins and ramps on the middle and outer rings.
    And the rings work well with STI and the Shimano front derailleur. Do
    a search on this forum and you will find many references to Shimano
    front derailleurs being very specific to the middle ring size. Front
    derailleurs designed for 42 tooth middle rings shift like [censored] with STI
    when people put a 39 tooth middle ring on. And you want to put on a 38
    or 36 middle ring with the Nashbar or Sugino cranks. And of course you
    have to buy a new bottom bracket. Of unknown length while the Shimano
    105 crank and bottom bracket are already correct.

    A 46-36-26 crank with a 11-34 cassette has pretty much the same gearing
    as a 52-42-26 with a 13-34 cassette. You can get to the same gearing
    by switching the front crankset or by switching the rear cassette.
    Cheaper and easier and more foolproof to change the cassette. And the
    inner chainring of course.

    Forgot to say only the last 6-7 cogs of your cassette are on the alloy
    spider. The first 2-3 cogs are loose with loose spacers. Except the
    11 tooth with built in spacer but you would throw this one away. You
    can just buy a 13-23 Shimano 9 speed cassette, cheap, and use the 13
    and 14 cogs from it and then use the 15 loose cog and alloy spider cogs
    from your current cassette and build up a 13-34 cassette. No need to
    get a new 11-34 cassette to do this. Take your current cassette off
    and look at it. It might be on an alloy spider for the last 6-7 cogs
    or it might be all loose with the three little bolts from the back
    holding it together. I think Trek puts pretty cheap cassettes on its
    520 so would be surprised if its even at the price level of having the
    cogs on an alloy spider.

    I have to disagree. The gear inches with your suggested setup run from 86.5
    to 33.1 for the middle ring. In the other setup they run from 87.6 to 28.3.
    For the big ring the 105 crank runs from 107 to 40.9 and the lower geeared
    crank runs 111.9 to 36.2.

    The current 11-34 cogs are mounted in an alloy spyder, so they are not

    I could swap the rings out of the current crankset, maybe get some used
    ones. However, I'd really rather have the exact gears *I* want... *with*
    the
    pins and ramps.

    But that is just it, you do get the exact gears you want, actually more
    usable gears, by changing the cassette to a 13-34, by mixing up a 13-23
    9 speed cassette and 11-34 cassette. You can find both cassettes on
    sale for about $50-60 total. And a smaller 26 tooth inner chainring
    for $5-10. Cambria Bike Outfitters has the 26 tooth inner chainring
    for $5. Probably OK deals on the lower priced Shimano 9 speed
    cassettes with all loose cogs and spacers. And of course you keep the
    Shimano 105 crank with pins and ramps on the middle and outer rings.
    And the rings work well with STI and the Shimano front derailleur. Do
    a search on this forum and you will find many references to Shimano
    front derailleurs being very specific to the middle ring size. Front
    derailleurs designed for 42 tooth middle rings shift like [censored] with STI
    when people put a 39 tooth middle ring on. And you want to put on a 38
    or 36 middle ring with the Nashbar or Sugino cranks. And of course you
    have to buy a new bottom bracket. Of unknown length while the Shimano
    105 crank and bottom bracket are already correct.

    A 46-36-26 crank with a 11-34 cassette has pretty much the same gearing
    as a 52-42-26 with a 13-34 cassette. You can get to the same gearing
    by switching the front crankset or by switching the rear cassette.
    Cheaper and easier and more foolproof to change the cassette. And the
    inner chainring of course.

    I have to disagree. The gear inches with your suggested setup run from 86.5
    to 33.1 for the middle ring. In the other setup they run from 87.6 to 28.3.
    For the big ring the 105 crank runs from 107 to 40.9 and the lower geeared
    crank runs 111.9 to 36.2.

    Like I wrote, "actually more usable gears". You have three rings on a
    triple. No point in having super low gears on the big and middle
    rings. That is what the inner ring is for. Its good to have some
    overlap at either end of the outer and middle rings, but not to have
    100% duplication. Your alternative has a low of 28.3" on the middle
    ring and a low of 36.2" on the outer ring. And about 20" for the inner
    ring. Too much duplication. Or is it triplication when all three
    rings are about the same. As for telling the difference between a high
    of 86.5" and 87.6" on the middle... Or a high of 107" and 111.9" on
    the outer ring... You need to ride more. In my suggested 13-34 setup,
    you have three cogs with 1 tooth jumps, 13-14-15. 1 tooth cog jumps
    are very usable. Your current 11-34 cassette goes 11-13-15. Big 2
    tooth jumps when using the small cogs. You end up with more useful
    gears by having 1 tooth jumps instead of 2 tooth jumps. Go ride a road
    bike with a closely spaced cassette and notice how nice it is to have 1
    tooth jumps between cogs. Mountain bike cassettes starting with 11 and
    12 don't offer this.

    You need to take a loaded touring bike, say with 75 to 80 pounds of
    equipment plus the extra 10-15 pounds or so for the steel bike and ride some
    yourself. Try some rolling hills, such as found on the route from Brussels
    to Paris for about 350km and then tell me how useful a one tooth jump is.
