  4. A foot race where the winner and fastest runner is 46 years old? And
the second fastest runner is 40 years old?

Anyone ever heard of a race where the top two finishers had a combined
    age of 86?

This is unusual and thus noteworthy. I doubt anyone here's ever seen
    something like this.

    Congratulations Doug.

Not unusual at all. It happens all the time in ultra events.

    Congratulations Doug.

Here's one where the top two finishers had a combined age of 101.

Congrats Doug. I see Jacque got an AG 4th, and (finally?) beat you. I had a
look at the course map and photos. Looks like very nice terrain. Any idea on
the total amount of climb? Training speed for your group with Bull Run
    coming up right?

As far as I know it's an open event, provided you pre-register. Looks like a
really great course to run also!

But in contrast to these "races" they call "runs" because it's more a
gathering of like-minded people -- I happened to tape the 'running' show on
YES network today, and they had a segment on Bekele winning a cross country
race in Edinburgh (from January), being "pushed all the way to the finish
line by Qatar's World 3000m steeplechase champion Saif Saaeed Shaheen".
Quite a treat to watch and a hell of a show of strength. This guy runs a
*fast* 50k every week in training for part of the year, and would kick
everyone's ass in any race up 50 miles if he had any motivation. Who knows
beyond 50 miles - would Bekele's speed (strong mix of enough fast twitch for
shorter races) get in the way over a loper like Paul Tergat? Who knows, but
it's safe to say if they ever do decide to run ultras, it will be after
they're retired, in their ripe old late 30's or 40's...

65 year old Joe Burgasser came in second at the above race. I knew and ran
once or twice with Joe (one of the top -- if not the top -- 65yo's in the
country) back when he was a tough, tough, 45 year old. Rail thin, and a
    good coach.

As to the Hat race, Barry Lewis (age 46)'s 3:48 is excellent for a hilly
trail 50k. I poked around for a few year's past results, and couldn't find
a faster time in the past by 30-somethings in their prime.

On the whole, Lance has a point (fields are smaller and weaker for ultras),
but in this case, Lewis is the real deal, even at his age.

Damn young bucks. 😉 I congratulated him after the awards and he will
be a force. That was his first trail race and distance past the
marathon. Even if I had raced the course I could not have bettered his
    time.

Some plans just go by the wayside. Myself and my female sidekick Jacque
were doing this a training run for Bull Run. The plan of attack was go
through the 16 mile mark about 3:00-3:10 and run about 6 hours. While we
didn't start off running together, we did finally meet up a few miles
down the trail. In effect we were just running comfortably.
We hit the 1/2 in 2:45 - oh [censored]! So much for an easy run on the clock.
We stayed together until the last aid station about 6 miles from the
finish.. I was looking for a paper towel for my bloody hand while
    refueling. Yup, a 1 1/2 with a twist( difficulty factor of 2.9) and 9.5
in style points and I didn't impale myself.

When I looked up she was not there so I went on. She could have been in
front of me or in the bathroom. She was in front and running really
strong. She finished in 5:20 and me in 5:24. The student once again
whips the teacher. We did do negative splits so we had not abused
ourselves to the NTH degree. It was a well paced abusive effort. 🙂

I did pass two guys with gray hair in the last mile. They were slowing
but who knows maybe they were the difference between air and iron. They
only go one deep in age awards. As the results revealed they were only
in their 50's. The guy that beat me had finished 15 minutes in front of
me and munching on a dog. As Jacque and I were in the second loop I kept
barking out numbers. She finally asked what the numbers were about. I
replied the number of people we has passed. I passed 45 and she 52. It's
not that we sandbagged but more that race is 50% rookies and have no
idea how to pace themselves and thus dramatically [censored] the bed in the
later stages. Many were walking flat sections while others slowed to a
    crawl.

The weather was near perfect for us - 35-45 degrees. The 40% chance of
rain never happened. I went out in tights thinking I may switch to
shorts at the half, nah, I stayed in my light tights and was
comfortable. There was a breeze and the real feel was a lot lower, at
    least for me.

The four ho's did phenomenal and for me, what this race was all about.
We trained together for 3 1/2 months pounding out some quality training
miles. There were tp be two others but one had broke her foot in her
driveway on some ice and another came up sick. The two rookies broke 6
hours which was a great accomplishment. It showed the training was right
and they went out at a conservative pace. They both remarked at the end,
now I really understand why you hiked our asses off in training to go
along with the diet of hills. The second year babe took of about 20
minutes and my 50 mate took off 10 in a training run and me 11.

The real question, did we run too fast or was our training that strong?
We'll know at mile 40 at Bull Run in two weeks. 🙂 Back into
    recovery/taper mode.

Happens all the time in the distance world. Even you have a chance once
you get your zeal under control. 3:48 for a 50k by a 46 year old. You
should be able to dust that slow old fart. 😉

It's not unusual in the ultra world. People start off on the roads with
the gamut of 5k through the marathon and then move on into trails and
ultra races for a variety of reasons and not necessarily because they
get slower. This all takes time and why so many good ultra runners are
in the 40's. In addition, with trails being so forgiving, many runners
stay competitive through their 50's and 60's and 70's.

Hey, nice job Freese. Especially for having prepared your whole harem and
then getting the flock to the finish in a great time. Spending that much
time with you may have ruined their reputations but at least it's paid off
    in their running.

So if these guys - http://www.gunksrunning.com/ - can do it, when are you
gonna open Uncle Doug's Ultra Camp, the only running camp with a two-drink
    minimum? ;-)

Is a 2 week taper optimum for you and the hos? Or is it just because
there are 2 weeks between HAT and BRR, so you don't have a choice? I
just started a 3 week taper for my 4/15 event.

Contrats to you are your ho's on the most excellent training run.

I can't get any numbers. At best I'd guess 2,500 - not much, and why
    it's a good race for first 50k.

The ho's are nuts!! They're already eying the Vermont 50k or 50. We go

I usually taper 2 weeks for 50k/50 and three for 100. Been doing that
for 10 or more years. HAT and BR vary 2 to three weeks apart. When only
two I don't race it balls to wall. The question is, and I won't know the
answer until the next event, did I run too hard. I ran negative and
still had a little left so I wasn't totally expended. Plus I recover
    fast but we'll see.
