Have a newbie question about rings

A triple chainring is exactly that. the bit where the pedals
spin round - there's three chainwheels. A big outer one for
all the fit types to use to spped along at a great rate of
knots, a middle sized one for normal mortals to use and a
little one for unfit types to use to help them get uphill...

Well if that's what the large one is for, then what are you
supposed to use to fray the bottom of your pants and snip
your shoe laces?

I've never heard that. Inexpensive bikes all come with
triple rings; and the expensive bikes that come with doubles
are usually offered in triples for barely more ($20 more on
a $1000 or $3000 bike).
