  1. Did anybody else get to the movie last night?

I'm hooked! I now 'get' the idea of watching a race ๐Ÿ™‚

(of course it would have been even better if 3 of us didn't end up sitting on the floor because some boys up the front wanted to save seats for their apparently invisible friends ๐Ÿ™„ )

If you get the chance to see the film, go...

    Yeah, my fav bits were;
Starting credits, Ralph pushing out 400+ watts and still talking,
    just๐Ÿ˜‰

Erik [censored] that his Av speed was 'only' 42km/h in the TT.

IIRC, starts May 19th at a cinema here in Carlton... Looking forward to the
subtitles (my copy of the movie is missing them)... what is with sitting
on the floor? If you have paid money and there is a spare seat, you have
every right to claim it.. (assuming its not allocated etc).. I'd be more
than rolling eyes, I'd be rolling heads..

    cheers,

he's a pro and that is slow, it just sounded funny from a rec rider
    perspective.

Some clubs were given tickets for a pre-screening - my sweetie does that, you know... T**-A****n stuff ... and had some passes. I didn't realise that it hadn't started though (damn, I'll have to wait before sharing my favourite moments :p )

As for the seats, they let in as many people as there were seats - but by the time we realised that the friendless in the front were, indeed, without mates, it had started and didn't seem to warrant disrupting others to get to them.

  8. I know nothing about this film...

Anyone got a brief synopsis. And is this going to only be shown down
south, or may it appear in BrisVegas??

    Cheers,
Absent Husband (whose up for anything that involves popcorn and sitting
down for an hour or two...)

How long was he putting out 400 for?

You may be interested to know that even an average recreational
cyclist can put out (peak) over 1000w for a short time. A good
sprinter will exceed that by a fair margin though.

Hey, if you'd rather do something active, Hamish and I are going cross
country running in Toohey forest tonight! Yes it will be dark, raining
    and muddy. Sounds like fun!

    from the website : cinemanova.com.aufilmsoon.html

"Terrific documentary about the Tour de France

Now over 100 years old, Le Tour de France, is the toughest bicycle race of them all and year after year, this spectacular and nail-biting event fascinates millions around the world.

Academy Award winning German filmmaker Pepe Danquart brings the beauty of the French landscape together with the suspense of the race. This terrific documentary offers not only a fascinating insight into the Tour itself but also brings the viewer up close and personal with the individuals on the bikes; their pain, torture and fear, the tears of those who are out of the race, and the joy of those who have suffered, but fulfilled their biggest dream - to reach the finishing line of the world's toughest race."

    cheers,

Couldn't tell, it was just a quick bit in the film.

Geez, there's hope for me yet๐Ÿ˜‰ Just going on my cycle2max posts I'm
still only in the 200's ๐Ÿ™ Would love to crack a 300 on just one climb,
    any climb will do...๐Ÿ˜‰

There's a very big difference between peak and MSS power,
and they're not all that closely related - it's quite possible
to have a huge peak power (around 2000w for a top class
track sprinter I think) and a low MSS power, and visa
versa. "short time" means 10 or so seconds in this case.

Interesting that any human can put out that level of energy, given that one
horsepower (and it's called that for a reason) is only about 750watts. Note
that I'm not saying I disbelieve you, just that I find it weird.

This is my VO2max test from a year ago, which is a rampup test,
so it's not measuring peak power, and I was putting out
450w for a few minutes. I couldn't sustain it for long,
but it wasn't anywhere near a peak output.

    http://www.aboc.com.au/docs/20040129vo2.htm

At the time that test was done I was just starting to
be competitive in C grade road races on flat courses,
other riders we tested at the same time had similar outputs
(around 450w) that they could sustain for 2-3 minutes, and
    they could climb quite well.

I don't have a peak test to show you, but once I get that
powertap hub .... peak power for a sprint is well over
1000w though. Top sprinters are around 1600w or more.

Have a look at this :

I got it on DVD and as a cycling tragic i quite enjoyed it. Getting to hear Zabel and co being candid is interesting at times and its not often you get to see such sexy footage of a cycling race. Later, once i got over the fact you rarely get to see behind the scenes i thought it was pretty dull. As a film or doco or whatever i didnt think much of it. Really felt rather lifeless and this one one of the best and most exciting Tourยดs we have had in a long while. Felt more like the race was just a sideshow or just happened to be going on, like a backdrop to the directorยดs his own little show.
