Helmet cam...

Depends. Do you already have the miniDV? Do you want to risk it on
your helmet? Does it have A/V inputs?

I have two bullet cams I no longer use and would let go cheap, but you
need a miniDV with A/V inputs for it to work. There aren't many of
those around anymore.

If you already have the MiniDV and don't mind risking it on the helmet
an enclosure will set you back around $200. That and some engineering
to attach it to your helmet are all you would need.

I will need to get an updated camcorder as well, I would prefer
something small I can throw in my Camelback. I don't need the extra
weight on my head. I'm totally new to this so it a bit of an
education. Does the bullet/lipstick cam you use dictate the resolution
of the capture regardless of the actual camcorder or is it based
strictly on the camcorder?

What's another 5 pounds on your head?

You will need a Sony DCR-HCXX series camcorder or as I have just found
out, an Archos Multimedia Player/Recorder (never tried it that way) in
order to use a bulletcam. You can get most of the details and products
here:

The Viosport Adventure Cam3 (I have one of these) will give you the
highest resolution of any bullet cam (520 lines). The cheaper bullet
cams are in the 380 lines range. The difference between the cheap and
Cam3 is very noticeable in quality and brightness. Still not as good as
the miniDV itself, but cam3 is respectable. You will not get a 16:9
format with the bullet cam.

Fry's has the cheapest model of the Sony DCR-HCXX series, but it's still
around $500 - $600. The bullet cam is another $329.

Then you have to think about editing. You could use XP's built in
software, but it sucks BIG time. Adobe now makes a cheap version of
premiere called Elements which should work for simple editing. It is
around $100. But, the best results will come from the full version of
premiere. I have seen it for around $900, but there is always those who
use Bit Torrent. I am not advocating that and yes, I do own the full
blown product.

Yes, it's not a cheap hobby.

I have the original Vaiosport cam and it's ok but not great. I decided
it was more hassle that it was worth and haven't used it in ages.
That's cool about the Archos, I was thinking that something like that
would be the ticket. I saw a recorder that used CF cards as storage that
had promise too, but it needed some hacking (for example - it only came
with an AC adapter and no battery solution, and a remote would be nice).
But that product seemed like it was aimed at people wanting to record
stuff to watch on smart phones or iPods, so it used lots of compression.

If I could score a cheap enough flash-based recorder I might give it a
whirl again. That would make the helmet cam self-contained, and then I
could use my other cam for non-helmet perspectives on the same shoot.

Is it a HD or memory based device? If it's hard drive, then forget it.
The drive can't take the hits. I thought those JVC HD cameras would
be great, but one light hit and it automatically shuts down the drive.
Useless.

Nevermind, it must be Hard Drive if it's 30 GB. In that case it will
not work for mountain biking.

Ask a skydiver, camera flyers have been using helmet cams for years.
Many skydiving helmets are designed to hold cameras and these guys are
interested in the lightest smallest equipment. Try someplace like
dropzone.com for skydiver talk.

a bit in the past couple of years. Twin Otters drink a lot of juice.

$15 to altitude 7 days a week. Its been years since they raised prices
out there. We got two Beech 99's too. All with air conditioning 😉
