help needed on repair

Your problem is the plastic thingy jamming your freewheel.

The best repair you can make without specialist tools is to cut the
plastic thing off entirely (you will probably need to cut it into 3 or 4
pieces with really strong scissors and pliers).

Everything will work perfectly then.

This could be due to a fault in your freewheel or hub and not related to the
broken spoke protector. A bike shop mechanic should advise after having a
look & twiddle. (How's that for a pub name?: The Look and Twiddle).

I think you'll have to remove the sprockets* to fit a new guard aka
protector, but maybe you could bust the existing one off with the sprockets
still in place. It's not necessary to have one if your gears are adjusted
well.

* How you do this depends on whether it's a freewheel or cassette. See

As long as the OP makes sure that the limit screw is set so that there
is no chance of shoving the derailleur into the spokes. That would not
be good.

Have you got (or can you borrow) a hot glue gun? If so, just glue the
spoke protector disc to a few spokes to stop it rattling around. Or
drill a few holes and attach it with zip ties. Or as someone else
suggested, smash it up into little pieces and throw it away - it doesn't
do anything useful unless you bend the rear derailleur so much that it
gets chewed up by the back wheel, or your gears are so far out of
adjustment that the chain throws off the inside of the sprockets and
chews the spokes.

You're not giving us enough detail, but it sounds like something's badly
wrong with the freewheel. It's possible that splinters off the plastic
disk have got lodged in the mechanism.

If the rear mech is properly adjusted that plastic disk does nothing useful
anyway, so take it off and throw it away - and keep your mech adjusted.
