Actually that was the Southern California/NV TT Championship. The Northern Calif/NV TT Championship
was held back in June. Be it good or bad USCF doesn't recognize a unified CA for reasons of "state"
championships.

Incorrect. He was DQ'ed for the illegal shoe covers.

It always seemed a pretty obvious thing to do, to me.
It isn't as if nobody cares about helmet aerodynamics -- there's plenty of TT helmets there.

In the latest issue of Dutch magazine 'Fiets' there's an article on LVM's preparation for the hour
(let me indulge you Bruce: 287 KB 1553x1089 phys.uu.nllvmhour.jpg ) and
apparently this old helmet already used by Keetie van Oosten-Hage when she set the hour record in
1978, was the most aero. Including the holes.

The most aero of those that would be legal under the UCI's retro hour record rules, you must mean.
Perhaps not much surprise there...notice how closely it hugs her head, resulting in minimal frontal
area? This is probably at least one reason why head fairings that offer no protection are generally
more aero than e.g., a Louis Garneau TT helmet that must have reasonably thick foam to meet the
crashworthiness standards.

P.S. I predict LVM doesn't break Longo's record. She may - or may not - go faster at altitude than
she would at sea level, but not enough to be successful.

Well, that one is sure to make Bruce happy.
The helmet looks like a Brancale. They were popular here in the US before the USCF adopted the rule
that helmets had to provide some protection for the head, a standard the Brancale's couldn't match.
They were garbage in many ways, the straps were thin and broke easily. But it is interesting to know
that they had at least one saving grace.

Small holes in front, big in back, are what Mark Drela reported is the best. But the Giro and
friends standard is clearly not optimal.

I would tend to agree. What she showed in the past at hour record attempts wasn't very convincing.
And neither are her regular results this year. She seems very confident herself though: "What Longo
can do, I can do too." The spokesman of the wind tunnel facility is quoted as saying that their
tests resulted in a 5 to 6% improvement. Stupidly enough, it doesn't say of what exactly (frontal
area, distance?). Then the "Nike Swift Spin Time Trial Suit", like the one Armstrong had on in the
Tour TT, should bring another 1 to 2% according to Nike.

A trip to the local NL newsstands probably reveals a myriad of modeling and cycling mags that LZ
graces, unlike here in the USA where she might appear only on CN or Velonews on occasion. Before the
Internet actually has some good sources for cycling [early 90's], news and photos were hard to come
by. Winning, Velonews, Cycling weekly, Bicycle Guide and Bicycle magazine, which I had all five were
mediocre at best for covering women's cycling. I didn't even know LZ was out of the sport in the mid
90's until a Dutch tourist told me while I worked on his broken down car in Yosemite. Turned out it
was just his safety key fell out. I got better updates from Dutch tourists then from cycling mags
back in those days about Longo and LZ.
Last time I checked my limited news sources, she was considering cutting her hair because it won't
fit under the helmet. Also the track is not ready so that's another setback. She spent time in Spain
in the Sierra Nevada training and the word is she is ready but if the track repairs drag out, then
her fitness will suffer if she just have to hang out over there breathing the notorious Mexico City
smog. I give her a thumbs up to break the record, but the indications are she will fall short.

I wondered about that. The sponsoring club calls it the "Fiesta Island State Championships Seniors &
Masters Time Trial"
I'd be [censored] if I'd won and later found out I wasn't state champ after all.

So in the end she decided not to go with the helmet pictured in the wind tunnel. Either that or the
one in the wind tunnel picture is not the helmet referred to in the article.
It also looks like she cut her hair.
