  1. Had my hernia repaired a month ago now (had to go private cos NHS suck
and couldnt sort me out in a decent time scale - went to british hernia
centre and i would recommend them to anyone), still slightly swollen
but i have been told im ok to do stuff as long as it doesnt hurt.

Anyone had similair experiences and how long before you started again?

The only thing i do know is that after 3 months it will be fully
repaired (and stronger than before due to the way the muscle grows
through the mesh), however i wouldnt mind doing some low stress stuff
    in the meantime. Any ideas?

    Cheers,

    Chris

I had a hernia repair about 11 years ago at age. After the first week,
I swam 5-6 days a week and after six weeks I was able to start lifting
again. I still had some pain in the area for a while but I ramped my
weights back up over a period of 6 months or so until I was back close
to maximum. I think it was a year before I was doing 1RM in squats and
    deads.

  3. Thanks for the reply Stephen. I done some bicep curls last night
without any pain at all (no where near as heavy as before the op tho, a
good 5kg off :3( ), however the weight as supported on my elbow much
like preecher curls and i was careful not to twist or tense stomach.

I may have had a different repair than you? Did they stitch your
hernia? I do know i got a mesh repair which should enable a good
    recovery, or so im told.

Running, swimming (and i think rowing machine) sound like a good
idea... ill really work with that and crunches to build me abs up.

    What ya reckon?

Had hernia repair 14 years ago. Dr. said "No restrictions after 6
weeks." I followed that and have not had any problems.

slide a yam up your bunghole, and it if feels OK then you can start lifting
    weights.

Your surgeon will probably tell you that you can start lifting when you feel
like you can. If you're having mesh put in, you're going to have to get
used to that feel. I can still feel it some times when I do abs.

  8. thats exactly what he said! "if it dont hurt its ok"... however thats
very vauge imho! from week 3 after the op felt like i could cary stuff
without any discomfort, done some concentration curls after 5 weeks
(way off my original weight - didnt wanna push it), havent had any pain
when lifting but i just cr@p myself im gunna do it again

people at work have told me i should be more carefull since i may have
damaged the repair for being active after the operation (after 3 weeks
and the major swelling went down i started playing golf, carrying full
basket of groceries around etc), but at the end of the day i felt quite
comfortable doing those activities and didnt get any pain so i trust
the surgeons advice is right. i just hope it will repair good so when i
start lifting and challenging myself again it will hold.

i worry to much methinks! :3S

Thanks for the replies btw, hearing from other people helps put my
    worries to rest.

You have to be careful about the advice you are given, even from your
doctor. After one week, my surgeon told me I could not lift, run or do
explosive movements. Among the choices was swimming so I did that every
day since I like to swim anyway. After six weeks he said the wound was
75-80% as strong as it was going to get and I coud do anything I wanted.

I asked about training at the gym and he said not to worry because it
wasn't like I was lifting 200 lbs or something. I said my heavy lifts
were more than twice that and he wasn't so sure but he 'thought' it was
okay. He didn't have a good understanding of what we do in the gym.

It takes a year before the repair is about as strong as it is going to
get, which can be stronger than it was before the hernia. There is
probably going to be some pain from the wound for a while so you will
likely want to ramp up over time anyway.

Playing golf or carrying groceries is one thing, (no wait, that's two)
but if you are doing 1RM deads and squats you might want to work your
way back into it. Let common sense prevail.

But what do I know, I am NO doc by a long shot.

  12. actually i find it usefull to get info from a number of places...
especially from ppl who lift heavy and what their experiences are, i
    think that is sensible.

the groceries were heavy though :P not 400lb's worth though :3)

i am kinda gettin very very minor discomfort and i think i can feel the
mesh at times, i was worried because i didnt have it before but then
again i am slowly getting feeling back down there (it was totally numb
until last week) so i am sure its that. if it gets any worse ill go
    back to the dr's.

your back lifting heavier than before your op then stephen?

    cheers,

    chris

The female hormones made his breast sore.

Yes, almost all of my heaviest lifts were post op, but probably at least
a year post op. This had more to do with how slowly I ramped up my
training after the period of lighter training just before and after the
surgery rather than any weakness in the repair itself.

I did have some pain and numbness directly in the scar area for a year
    or so.

He wasn't, but once the doctors cut off his balls, it made him a more
    complete lifter.

You see, Steve as a woman looks like Nicole Bass on a heavy steroid cycle.

He'd defeniately fit in with this group then.
