High Triglycerides

  1. My latest lipid profile (12 hour fast) included:

    Total Cholesterol 185 HDL Cholesterol 40 Triglycerides 411

    What concerns me most about these readings is the high triglyceride count. Is there a statin, or
    some other medication, that would lower triglycerides to somewhere below 200?

    Would suggest that "noway" ask his/her doctor about the 2PD approach if s/he is overweight (BMI
    more than 20):

    (2) Exercise should be brisk walking or equivalent for at least 30 minutes daily right before the
    evening meal.

    (3) Reduced carbohydrate should not be interpreted as "low carb."

    (4) Increased dietary fatty fish which implies higher overall intake should be interpreted as an
    "exchange." I.e. instead a main course of steak/pork/chicken etc, try fatty fish. Since many
    people don't like fish or are concerned about heavy metal poisoning, would suggest that "noway"
    ask his/her doctor about omega-3 fatty acid supplements instead.

    Not now. The holidays beckon.

    I recall early studies (1980s?) reporting that BMI was the best predictor of serum triglycerides
    and that level of exercise was the best predictor of HDL (which was low in the case of the
    original poster).

    More recent research has focused on the effects of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, particulary DHA.

    It was after reading a lot of the research that I tried this out myself. I'd say I dropped TG from
    about 280 to 60 with weight loss, reduced carbs (refined starches), exercise (at least 50 minutes of
    cardio 6 days a week at about 10 METs), and fish oil and DHA supplementation. HDL also doubled.

    I agree that this is a sci.med group and cites are important. I just don't have the time to pull
    together a good list right now, partly because I am advocating "combination therapy" which makes the
    job a big one.

    Would suggest that an easier protocol for "noway" to follow might be the 2FD approach. If has
    several practical advantages over the 2PD approach and has a comparable scientific basis and
    published success rate.

    I developed the Two Foot Diet approach (2FD) as a replacement for Dr. Chung's Amazing Logic Defying
    Two Pound Diet to avoid having to carry a scale around.

    Inspired by Dr. Chung's scientific approach, as described on his website, in 2003, my wife and I
    attended an IMAX film about climbing the Bavarian Alps and learned that despite their exhausting
    regimen, the climbers consumed only 10 packages of wieners per week. That's less than 2 feet of
    wieners per day! Since none of the climbers died from starvation, I think it is safe to assume that
    2 feet of food per day should be more than adequate for us non-climbing folks.

    So I started a little experiment with the agreeable obese friends in my neighborhood. I gave them
    ordinary 6 inch rulers with instructions to measure the length of everything substantial that passed
    into their mouths. The only things exempted were water and sugar-free drinks. What I learned was
    that my obese friends were consuming between 8 to 12 feet of food per day! At the time, I was about
    10 lbs. over my ideal body weight so I decided to find out how much I was eating per day... 3 feet.
    I cut back to less than 2 feet and was at my proper weight in one month.

    My friends have responded similarly except they have taken longer because of having to lose more
    weight. Admittedly, some of my obese friends were especially slow to respond. They also happen to be
    the ones with an unfortunate propensity for accidentally loosing their 6 inch rulers and taking
    weeks to buy replacements.

    So here's the deal: measure all the food you eat, using it's longest dimension, and keep the
    total length to less than two feet per day. That's all there is. No scales, no counting calories
    or carbohydrates. Heck, if you loose your ruler, you can even use the first joint of your thumb
    to measure.

    I am making this diet available as a public service and without compensation.

    If you have any questions, just see Dr. Chung's helpful FAQ and substitute "Two Feet" for "Two
    Pounds" everywhere... what could be simpler?

    Thanks, Jim. The biggest issue is I suffer from metabolic syndrome and diet and exercise alone
    has had very little positive effect in controlling the triglycerides. LDL reduction was improved
    some and the HDL favored well. TGs were around 100 at my last visit, however I'm on lipid
    medication to control.

    I recall early studies (1980s?) reporting that BMI was the best predictor of serum triglycerides
    and that level of exercise was the best predictor of HDL (which was low in the case of the
    original poster).

    More recent research has focused on the effects of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids,
    particulary DHA.

    It was after reading a lot of the research that I tried this out myself. I'd say I dropped TG from
    about 280 to 60 with weight loss, reduced carbs (refined starches), exercise (at least 50 minutes
    of cardio 6 days a week at about 10 METs), and fish oil and DHA supplementation. HDL also doubled.

    I agree that this is a sci.med group and cites are important. I just don't have the time to pull
    together a good list right now, partly because I am advocating "combination therapy" which makes
    the job a big one.

    That's ok, Jim. I'll vouch for you that it is relatively "easy" (the term "relative" is used here
    because for some folks being civil, which should be easy, is difficult). Others (ie Matti, who would
    be an example of someone with the aforementioned difficulty) have posted more than enough references
    here on SMC to convince folks that Omega-3 fatty acids are cardiovascularly beneficial. There have
    also been enough cites to support exercise and weight loss as favorable for improving lipid profile.
    Mr. Horne (another example) knows how to Google.

  12. I also had problems with my cholesterol & Triglycerides
    My Doctor has me on 80 mg lipitor also recently added a drug called zitia
    for my cholesterol.The numbers are good. For my Triglycerides he has me on a
    drug called Lopid, I take 600 mg twice a day. This seems to do a good job.
    Check with your Cardiologist or Primary about this drug

    In most cases, you need to subscribe to each journal or pay a per-article fee at each website. Some
    journals make older papers available on the web at no cost.

    What I do is go to the library. For recent papers in less-accessible journals I write to the author
    and request a copy.

    You should also be concerned about metabolic syndrome. You have at least two signs are low hdl and
    high trig. You need one confirming sign from the following: high bp, central obesity, high fasting

    it appears cerivastatin (Baycol) was more concerning relative to rhabdomyolysis than other statins.
    Baycol was removed from the market in mid 2001.
