After our big-screen TV broke about six months ago, hubby got a high-def
projector, rather than replace the TV. We have the display area on the wall
set at about 63 inches. Great for football and movies!

Good source of heat too. Probably won't need to have as many fires in the
fireplace. Should also show up noticably on your electric bill.

I don't care, either. This is just another of my hubby's toys. It's a guy

OB dinner: Grilled pork tenderloins stuffed with proscuitto and provolone

We just replaced our 32" Sony in the den with a Mitsubishi 46" HDTV... we
opted for LCD instead of plasma.

Now we're in the market for a surround sound system for the HDTV... very
confusing! Any recommendations?

Funny you should ask.... LOLOL! Hubby got a Panasonic PT950 surround
sound (1200 watts, 5.1). I like the speakers... they are tall and
slim. They said it was wireless, but it's not really. It's wireless
from the receiver to the back speakers, but those two are wired
together. "Wireless rear speakers" - HA! Someone needs to ding them
for truth in advertising.

It's reminiscent of the old "wireless walkie talkie"..... Hubby saw in
the back of a comic book and sent away for it when he was a kid. It
was wireless all right - two cups and a string! LOL! He says he and
his brothers made better ones at home using two cans and a string.

We bought a 34" screen, but now EYE'd like a bigger one; it's not just a
guy-thing.

Think about measuring your distance for the optimum viewing. Even for our
34" we measured and found we were sitting too far back.

My brother has a 50" flat screen high def TV. I have no idea why anyone
needs a TV this large (perhaps because I don't watch much TV). He kept
saying, "See? High definition! What a difference!" and I'm thinking no, I
really don't see any difference. It's just a big television. Of course he
also had to have a 20 inch monitor for his computer. Maybe that lasic
surgery (at $2000 per eyeball) didn't take so well after all... 😉

Lucky you. Now you will need high definition service, a high definition DVD
player..... and a gym membership to get you back into shape after wasting
too much time sitting on your duff enjoying the new toy :-)

I have always been disappointed in pictures of mountains, whether in books
photos projection screens, movies. They just don't the majesty of those big
piles of rock. Then one day I was walking through an electronics store
where they were showing a video of a balloon floating along through the
mountains. I was impressed, but the price tag scared me. They have come
down a lot since then.

I know what you mean, although I *can* see a difference with HD. A
20" monitor would drive me nuts. My current monitor is 17" but I
don't use full screen mode for anything. My new reader's window is
now about 13". That's enough for me.

Hubby was the same way--all excited about the HD. I can see a difference,
but I could care less about it.

Sorry, I am no help. For my birthday, my oldest son hooked up our
surround sound. Too many buttons, gadgets and gizmos for me. He showed
me which button to push to turn it on/off. I put a smiley face sticker
on the button, so I would remember which button to push (am I getting
old or what!). He is a petroleum engineer, I wonder where he learned
this stuff. LOL

Spanish Rice

2 1/2 cups water
salt and pepper
1 onion, chopped
1 jalapeño, seeded and minced
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon tomato paste
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 1/2 cups long-grain rice
1/4 cup minced fresh cilantro
1 medium tomato, seeded and diced small
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice

Bring the water to a boil, covered, in a small saucepan. Add 1
teaspoon salt and season with pepper to taste; cover to keep hot.

Meanwhile, combine the onion, jalapeño, oil, and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a
large saucepan. Cover and cook over medium-low heat, stirring
occasionally, until the onion is softened, 8 to 10 minutes.

Increase the heat to medium and add the tomato paste and garlic. Cook
until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add the rice, and stir to coat the
grains with oil. Cook until the edges of the grains begin to turn
translucent, about 3 minutes. Stir in the hot seasoned water and bring
to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer until all the water
is absorbed, 16 to 18 minutes.

Remove the pot from the heat and add the cilantro and tomato — do not
mix in. Cover the pot and let stand for 10 minutes, then add the lime
juice and fluff the rice with a fork and season with salt and pepper to
taste.

What a great birthday present. When I got a new stereo receiver for my TV
VR DVD satellite I had a heck of a time getting it set up properly. I had
to make a number of changes to get it right and it took a few weeks. Two
years <?> ago I got a new stand to hold all that electronic gear I
diligently labelled all the wires so that they could be hooked back up the
same way. I don't know if the labels were old or just cheap. When I got the
new stand put together and the electronic gear in place I started
reconnecting the cables. All but one of the labels had fallen off. It took
hours to get everything back together. It wasn't that hard to figure out
where they went. The trouble was running them through the access holes and
figuring out which was which.

I have successfully conned oldest stepson into setting up the surround
system when we finally figure out which one to purchase... he says we need
a blu-ray DVD player... ONLY adds plus or minus $500 to the price tag! I
don't think blu-ray is an absolute must <g>
