  1. Energy gels seem to be very effective, yet they are exorbitantly
expensive. I'm considering making my own energy gel from malt extract
and some other assorted ingredients. A couple questions:

I know that most energy gels (PowerGel, etc.) use maltodextrin as their primary ingredient. It's my
understanding that this is the major component of malt extract (which is used in brewing beer). Is
    this correct?

Also, does anyone have any experience in creating their own gel's?

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  2. Pat....Pat....Pat......Pat. Come'on Pat. You can get gels for less than $1 a pack. What's your time
    worth to you Pat?

I'm willing to bet it's more expensive for you to make and package your own than it is to buy'em.

    Here's a tip....right now on Ebay, item Item number: 2975488795. That's right...24 Pack of
PowerGel...bidding's under $5 at the moment...

Remember reading in WSJ or NYTimes or Investor's Business Daily, that one of the most profitable
products next to bottle water was "gels."

I also remember reading that the price of a latte with the foam, or several other products pumped
with air were also extremely profitable since we were paying mostly for air.

Does anyone else ask for their drinks with "little ice?"

What the hey. We pay for the convenience.....and the marketing.

  4. Since maltodextrin is metabolized to glucose in about 2 seconds by your digestive tract it doesn't
matter what you use really. Try some pancake/waffle syrup - yummy and cheap. Get one of the GU brand
bottles and attach it to your water bottle strap via a nice holder. Refillable and holds up to the
    equivalent of 6 GU packets.

JK dogheaddesign.comdogheaddesign.com has some great holders for the bottles... website kinda hard to
navigate... but go to products and look for GU type holders

Or try Electroshock Therapy -- it worked for Miss Anne Thrope (her delusions of mediocrity
    excepted).

  7. Pat,

I doubt that malt extract is primarily maltodextrin. Maltodextrin is not fermentable by beer yeast
    and, obviously, malt extract is.

However, you can purchase maltodextrin at your favorite home brew shop.

I do that and mix it with my sports drink. It is a little hard to dissolve, I use a wire whisk.
