synthetic motor oil doesn't thicken in those temps; as far as cable lube is concerned, i use slick-50 grease, a very light coat, and it works!

The strategy I had in mind is to use WD-40 to displace the water after the cable gets wet, such as when you wash it or ride home in salty puddles, which can refreeze.
