Freezing does not disinfect. It may kill some bacteria, but certainly not
all of them. Soap remains the best general purpose disinfectant. Of course,
if your water is not aseptic, your efforts are moot.

It also depends on what you mean when you say water bottles. If they're
HDPE, you're probably OK, but other materials are not intended for reuse and
should be recycled instead.

they are pop bottles. the only reason i ask is that i feel sick and it
does not feel like the flu. i guess i could buy water bottles designed
for reuse. i would have to get special brush to wash insides. damn
this will be a lot of work.

example. Or polyol plasticizers in other cases. Phthalates, in yet other
cases. There are precious few plastics which are safe in the microwave, and
little information available to determine just which one you have in front
of you.

I was actually asking the poster who made the sweeping, inaccurate
statement, thanks. It sounded like he was saying that the polymer per
se leached into the water. I was aware that some plastics were risky
for microwave use. It has been well publicised here. The most
dangerous is the leaching of vinyI chloride monomer from PVC cling
film and meat wrappers, but they were warned about (and withdrawn from
sale here) years ago. I was going to ask him about the HDPE
microwave-safe plastic utensils. There are many for sale here.

What's wrong with bleach? Oxidising is probably the best way to
denature protein. Try hydrogen peroxide. Freezing does nothing.

Hydrogen peroxide is a good solution to your problem (buy it in any
drugstore - preferably when on sale- usually for 1/2 price;-).
Another option: consider purchasing a water ozonator for your kitchen
(google it and you will find plenty of info on the advantages of
ozonation).
