You can easily go faster than that by freewheeling if the hill is steep
enough. 46 mph is my downhill record. I have been faster on the flat but
the lorry in front had something to do with it ;-)

43 mph, but there was a car in front of me that was maybe only going 40, so I had to let up. Didn't want to pass him.

On the old Orbit I got 37 down a reasonably shallow gradient (though it
does go on for a long time (from the A92 down to Carnoustie)). I span
out, not having huge gears. I don't have a cycle computer but was
racing some pals on their tandem at the time, and they do. They'd not
spun out but had maxxed out, I think I'd have been able to manage better
if I'd had a bigger ring (that was only a 48, so not unreasonable).

That tandem got to about 49 (IIRC) on the Speed Record Road down a *big*
hill that runs up to a local transmission mast on the Sidlaws. It's a
private road so no traffic unless you're /very/ unlucky, though the
cattle grid isn't for the faint of heart, so I'm told. Neil reckons
he'd have got faster but some stoopid dog decided to stand in the road
for ages so they had less of a run at it when it had finally buggered
off. A roadie pal broke 50 on that road. I've not tried it.

On the Streetmachine the top gear is pretty big (52 turning an 11) and
I've never got too close to spinning it out. It's not the most
aerodynamic machine in the world by quite a margin with underseat
steering and a relatively high seat. Doubt I've got much over 30 out of
it. I'd like to take something like a Speedmachine down a big hill:
cracking 40 would be no problem on one of those, I think.

Actually my top speed on a solo bike in the UK (49mph) is on the flat with a
headwind. You forgot to mention other factors :-)

(and to Bob, yes :-) 62, and it was just before an interesting blind narrow
damp corner (_much_ braking!) )
We did 38mph on the middle ring once (38x11 with 26" wheels).

53 mph descending Holme Moss to Hawes. It was pissing it down with rain
and going dark at the time so I bottled it then and slowed down to a
more reasonable 40. You could get more out of it I suspect.

On the flat? 30 mph most Tuesday nights on the chaingang 🙂

39mph, sitting relatively upright on a hybrid. I've since
changed from 700x38 tyres to 700x28, so I'm hoping to
break the 40mph barrier soon...

On a long downhill I've managed 42mph according to the computer. I have not
managed anywhere near this on any sort of uphill ;-)

51 mph (pedalling) downhill from Hartside towards Alston on the C2C route -
a pause was required in Alston for two reasons 1) My feet were so cold that
they went numb (although this was a hot day in May) 2) A change of
trousers was required ;-)

Machine was a Specialized ATB with slicks, loaded with about 15 stone of
rider and touring kit.

Curt Harnett did a 9.87 flying 200m in Bogota in 1995, which equates to
45.36 mph. Note that this is:

o at altitude, and
o on a velodrome, hence use can be made of the gradient of the banking to
help accelerate

64.5 mph on the west side of Killhope Cross, on a Kingcycle with front
fairing, tailbox and wheel discs. Far from being comfortable, it was
absofuckinglutely terrifying. Got the Trice XXL up to 85 km/h on the same
hill earlier this year, which was, on the whole rather less of a
white-knuckle job.

53.3mph down from Ditchling Beacon on a MTB. Was safely tucked up behind a
couple of roadies.

42MPH downhill on the clonker...... with a wind behind me...... Verified
by both the bike's computer and my friend tailing me in her Mercedes 180....

For those who know the road behind Kirknewton\ out from Balerno this was a
run back down the hill heading back to the village peaking just at Ainsdale
farm....

This is a cheap dual-suspension catalogue bike (Concept Diablo) fitted with
slicks, 52\39 front ring and 11-34 megarange rear cog all of which are
obviously non-standard. It's also fitted with mudguards, rack, lights and
carries about 25lb in weights on the back... It#s normally possible to do
about 35-37 MPH without much effort on that bit..

Must try it on a proper road bike some day ;-)

My max on the MTB and ont he road bike are the same but in different
locations at different times. The MTB has hit 72km/h on road in Asker (just
west of Oslo) and the road bike hit the same speed coming of col de
madeleine (sp?) just ont he other side of the river Po from Turin. The scary
bit was coming down from Basilica di Superga when I had to hit the brakes
for the hairpins and stop several times to reduce the cramp in my hands.
Thre turns of the pedals after the bend and I was over 40 mph... Never quite
found out what I could have done down that road.

In recent times I have topped 40 mph on the MTB down City road in Dundee.
Not tried the descent of Craigowl hill yet (only just got to the first
cattle grid before I ran out of time).

Did just under 50 following a trailer down the A404 near Marlow many years
ago.

ISTR I hit 42mph on the Street Machine last summer. I have yet to take
it down a hill where it would be safe to go any faster, but when I do so
it will indeed be in great comfort ;-)
