How many patches is too many?

They don't tend to be more durable, ime. I only bother paying a bit more
to save some weight with ultralight tubes.

I have a pair of the latex ones which are much lighter, but I seem to
end up only carrying them as small lightweight spares, as I can't quite
bring myself to make regular use of inner tubes which cost more that my
tyres. also, the things don't hold air for very long compared to butyl ones.

Talking about expensive tubes, I can't afford /not/ to patch my Conti
Supersonic ones. They're stupid-light butyl at 50 grams for 700x18-25.
That's lighter than latex! The material is so thin it punctures for no
apparent reason after while -- tiny weeny holes develop on rim-side.
Velox tape too rough for it?

These hold air longer than latex but of course not as long as normal
butyl.

Phwoar! Do you have stupid-light patches for them? ;)

D'oh!

There is bound to come a point where the patches weigh as much as the
tube...

The ones I got from Mike Dyason's are nice 'n' thin :)

I hope there comes a point where I stop buying silly things like these
tubes ;-)

I've tried these and now put them in the "stupid light" category. There's
no point in having a 10g lighter wheel if you puncture in a race.

I use Vitorria ones bought in bulk. I also never patch them, just bin
them. I do however patch my MTB tubes (since you puncture much more)
and my commuter bike. The main difference for me is that I've averaged
<2 punctures/year on my road bikes for the last few years and it's
much easier to patch high volume, low pressure tyres.

I patched a tube 5 times on a particularly thorn-strewn MTB ride, then
had no punctures for 12 years.

I had one on Saturday though (road bike). Nothing embedded in the tyre,
so must have been glass.

bulk jobbies - colons? Same subject.
