  1. I did my first race this past weekend and realized it would be very
nice to attempt to convert my entry level road bike (specialized allez)
to a bit more of a tri position. I need to do it on the cheap. My
stem is angled slightly up, I realize it would help to switch to a flat
one. Unfortunately (barring a closer look), i don't think i can drop
my current stem down. I think it's fixed in the angle position. Can I
just get something like the zoom oval road stem
    (http://www.nashbar.com/results.cfm?brand=2601&init=y)? Would that
    work?

Also, I've read about forward seat position. Can you just literally
move the seat forward on the seat post? If so, what's a recommended
distance, etc.? Or, if not, do I have to buy a specific forward seat
    post?

I'm checking out aero bars on ebay, but that might have to be a later
    purchase.

Any other suggestions or thoughts on the above?

  2. Emily,

The zoom stem is a welded construction stem. Many similar stems have been
used for years without problem. I personally would not use one again. I
recommend that you spend a few more dollars and purchase a forged product.
Aero bars will be the most effective way to gain a little speed. Often used
sets of clip-on bars are sold at reduced and fair prices on EBay. If you
should make a purchase on eBay always ask the seller if there is any visible
corrosion on the bars. If so avoid them.

I recently gave two sets of aero bars away on this forum for the shipping
cost. Perhaps there is someone lurking about that can help you now.

If you are just starting out why not do as you have for awhile till the
price of upgrading is not unpleasant.

Hi Ken! Last I hear of M S, he was asking about fish over on rec.reefs.
How's that for a coincidence? The one I'd really like to hear from is
    DJ, the Ironkid.

  5. Hi Tom and Ruth,

Just got back to Kauai from the place in Georgia where I checked out the
Bass. Good to be home but we did enjoy our visit.

    How ya'll doing?

I'm trying to recover from a long bout of laziness following IMFL. Back
into the routine now, but I'm 15 Lbs heavier than I was, and I was too
heavy before! Speaking of geting back into the routine, I've gotta go swim
    now... Take care!
