I've been trying to read this group using Outlook express but there is so
many spam messages I have a hard time finding the real content. Does anyone
know of a filter or what is your secret for reading the NG without all the
spam?

Filtering newsgroups can be difficult. You can filter by poster,
some people don't write anything of value and you can safely
ignore them using the blocked sender feature of OE. The best
filter however is the one between your ears. Only open those
threads that appear to be of interest. Experience is a good
teacher.

I don't seem to have a hard time identifying spam. I just don't read those
posts as the titles quickly give them away. In any case, you can't filter
spam using OE since it is too random.
Back in the heyday, there were so many on-topic posts that one had a hard
time keeping up. You were left with simply not reading those posts which are
not of immediate interest to you.
These days, there aren't that many on-topic posters here. You can gain a
clue about on-topic posts in many cases by looking at the poster's
name/handle, too.
There are some regular trolls here, however. You need to use the Block
Senders feature in OE to KILL THEM DEAD. That will get rid of a lot of
cross-posted junk that you're probably thinking of as spam. Note too that
many people go back and forth with these trolls, so you have to make a
decision if you want to block them too. I generally don't block those who
participate in this group, but I do block those I never see posting on-topic
here. The cross posting means that some of the replies come from people who
frequent other newsgroups and they typically have no interest in low carb.
So Kill them.
IMO, use your Block Senders feature as much as you can. Today's computer
are pretty fast and your CPU cycles are virtually free. USE THEM.

Hi, how are you, how are you? (Spoken in my best New York City Accent)
Ok, this how I do it and I think it works great. Go to your top tool bar and
click on "View" and then click on "Current view" and then change it to "Hide
read messages" and "Group messages by conversations. Then you go back to
your "View" and click on the thingy' that says, "Sort By". Just set that
puppy to "Sent" and "descending order".
After it's set up you can start using your right click to mark stuff as
read. Once you go through the whole group it easy to quickly keep with it
every couple days.

Are you talking about spam or trolls? There's not much you can do about
blocking spam since it's usually just hit and run and they usually change
their id each time.
If you're talking about the crossposting trolls.....
Highlight a post from a person you want to block, then in the OE toolbar
click on Message.... Block Sender.
You can also block entire threads by clicking on Tools.... Message
Rules....News. Click the New button and create a rule. Be careful to use the
entire subject line or pick out words that you wouldn't normally find in the
subject lines of diet posts or else you might unintentionally block posts
you want to see.
Good luck!

I thought it was just me i am having a bad time with spam too what do
we do?
I just ignore the posts from people who's ramblings I have no interest in,
read the ones I want to read and then mark them all as read when I'm done.
I hide the read posts so when I refresh, it's all gone and I do the same
thing when there are new posts to read. Anything crossposted I don't even
bother to read cuz most of the time it's someone's need for attention that's
trolling several ngs. It's sad but it's less aggravating for those of us
who really want to just read on topic information here.

Understand that a UseNet newsgroup is not a google group. Most
UseNet groups are unmoderated so anyone can post to them.
That means you can't have the expectation that someone else will
block spam posts in the group.
To block spam would take a moderated version of the group. It has
been discussed before but the problem is not large enough for the
effort it would take according to some off-group discussion among
interested parties.
To block trolls would take reading the group through some other
service than google.

The simplest single measure you can take is to block all cross-posts.
You can block all posts cross-posted to a particular group. Or you can
simply decide that you want to block anything posted to more than one
group. If your newsreader doesn't support this, you should seriously
consider finding one that does. It makes reading the group ever so much
more pleasant.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I was hoping there was some magic
trick
so that I could block all the off topic and sales type of posts and just be
able to read the good stuff .
