  1. I think I am periodically hyper-extending my left leg, which
of course places undue stress on my knee. With good
concentration, I can keep my form intact and manage okay.
But when I am tired, or my concentration drifts, the knee
    hyper-extends.

(I'm realtively new to running after long absence, though I
cycle intensely. Currently running ~3 miles easy tempo.)

What muscle work would help? Is this a resistance-training
issue? Leg curls for quads, muscles around knees, etc?

    Thanks for input.

It is necessary to better define the speed at which you are
running: easy means one thing, and tempo means an entirely
different thing to many people on this group. If you are
doing easy running, my suggestion would be to concentrate on
form throughout your run and to take smaller, perhaps
quicker steps. If you are running at lactate threshold, my
advice would be to run slower for most of your runs.

I don't understand how strengthening any muscles through
resistance training would correct hyper-extension except in
the very long term and coupled with continued running to
strengthen the running muscles. In this case, the hyper-
extension would improve because the running muscles are
better trained and can take longer strides.

I would venture to guess that basketball players who wear
knee bands are not wearing them for hyper-extension problems
but for ACL problems. I imagine they would help in your
situation only to the degree that they mechanically
    prevented over-striding.

You really should be posting this to alt.test. That way you
can try different things t get it to work without clogging
the newsgroups with test posts. Good luck.;-)

thanks for NOT being helpful! i was responding to my OWN
earlier post asking for help/insight on hyper-extension
problems, which has not received any feedback so far.

It's odd problem and likely that few know much about and why
no hits. Try you GP who in tern may suggest an orthopod or
    some simple PT.

oh, yes, by the way, usenet is a public resource for
anyone to clog up as they please.

You are correct and I sense some frustration but this
attitude may never you an answer to any question.

Actually, I was trying to be helpful. Sorry I didn't get it
quite right. If you want to make sure your post went
through, you can try doing a google search or go here:

You will see that the only response is my own idiotic
    rambling. ;-)

..and thanks for further follow-up. AOL posters frequently
have problems with consistent posting, based on my earlier
(5 yrs of usenet) experience. Google is not an accurate
    indicator for all newsreaders.

No, it's not accurate, but at least it's another way of
testing your posts when AOL is acting up. You could then see
that your post did in fact show up, even though nobody had
    responded to it.

since i've tried posting here, you and the trolls and
bikeme are about the only responders, so i figured
    something was askew.

BTW, have you checked into the possibility of using some
sort of knee brace to keep your leg from hyper-extending?
    Did you see Doug's response?

i did see his post, yes, going to the doc is always the
right thing to do. but everyone here seems to have some
preventive tip, i thought some muscle strengthening work
might be the right first step.

don't have any 1st hand experience with knee hyperextending
but you might do a google search for knee and hyperextension
or hyperextend. I saw a bunch of links including some with
braces, but a couple with strengthening exercises include:

    pponline.co.uk0879.htm nba.com-nba.com-
    /warriors/news/abdenour_knee_strengthening.html

FWIW, I use 3 of the 4 (straight leg raise (slightly
different than theirs), wall sit, ball on the wall squat)
for my knee strengthening (self preservation for downhill
running mostly, nothing to do with hyperextension).

i was wondering if those elastic-type knee bands you see
basketball players wear would be helpful. no one ever seem
to talk about those as being helpful for running knees.
    anyone know?

Probably have the same benefits as a crutch - useful when
rehabilitating, but you should work on strengthening or
biomechanics to fix the source of the problem. The
hyperextension is probably just the symptom. Too long use of
knee bands or other aid could result in weakening the
    muscles and joint.
