  1. 1 mile run plus 2 mile bike - lowest combined time wins!

My vote LA hands down - bike advantage would be too huge.

I don't know... it would depend on whether either of them
were preoccupied with coming up with meaningless things to
post on newsgroups to further a political agenda via link in
    sig file. ;-)

  3. It's still hypothetical but:

1- Alan Webb best mile is 3:53

2- Lance could probably complete the 2 mile bike portion
with an average speed of 58 km/h. It would take him 3:19 to
    complete the 2 mile ride.

3- I would be very surprise if Lance could run a mile faster
that 4:30. (if you consider the mile speed is about 110% the
    5k speed, a 4:30 miler should run around 15:30 for the 5k).

4- Alan Webb advantage after the mile run would be around 40
sec. Webb would then have 4 minutes to complete the 2 mile
ride. To do that, he would have to maintain a average speed
    of 48 km/h.

5- If Lance run a 4:50 mile (which is more realist that
4:30), Alan Webb would need to maintain 44 km/h to tie Lance
    combined time.

6- If Lance ride "only" an average speed of 56 km/h (3:26
for 2 miles), it will give an other 7 seconds for Webb to
complete the course. He then would need to maintain "only"
42.7 km/h to be tie with Lance.

7- Alan Webb is in good shape (I presume so!) and he's used
to short and intense efforts (3-10 minutes). He should be
    able to ride a 2 mile around 40-42 km/h.

8- If they do the 2 events back-to-back, it could affect
bike time differently for the 2 athletes. If the run is the
first event, Alan Webb will maybe have fresher legs than
Lance (who is not used to run) for the bike so he's bike
time will be less affected than Lance time. It's only a
    theory though...

    Conclusion:

If Lance can run a surprisingly fast mile (4:30), he will
win. If he run a decent mile (4:50), it could be very close,
depending of Webb cycling abilities. If Lance need 5 minutes
to complete the mile and / or the 2 events are non-stop, I
    think Alan should win.

  4. Lance was a very good triathlete before he became a roadie.
Lance also hates to lose at anything. Bet on Lance.

The horse would do fine on the running leg, but my
understanding is that they are not very good cyclists.

I'm not familiar with triathlon rules, but in bike racing
times are recorded from the leading edge of the bike. There
is no requirement that the bike actually be mounted and
ridden, it just works out easier that way.

So all you would have to do is rig a way for the horse to
carry the bike and the horse kicks ass.

Hey, you could get one of those collapsible bikes - the
ones that you can pack into a suitcase - and mount it on
    the horse.

Except Lance is a punk, and he'd give up 1.5 miles into the
    bike ride.

Huh? There's a donkey in the race too?

But bears are. The big problem is how to get the bear to
concentrate on the competition. I suggest the analogue of
dog racing, a run/bike pursuit where the human starts first,
but to motivate the bear, the human participant starts
    covered in honey.

  13. Thanks Dot,

3 miles - 18:57 on trails, with over an hour after that, not
bad. Probably LA would lack the anaerobic speed to compete
against Alan Webb, though if he trained for that it would be
interesting. No doubt Alan Webb would have to train for the
    bike too...

Doesn't Bike Nashbar sell a bike rack for horses? They seem
    to carry everything else.

OK, but would it help or would it hurt?

And what about JACK Webb versus Lance Armstrong? Who
    wins then?

    Cool. I didn't know that.

The reason is to accommodate flat tires.

Most folks carry a spare tube/tire or patch kit, but if you
get multiples, you may not be able to patch the last one.

It's not uncommon for a competitor to flat and then walk/run
the bike to the finish, especially if it's only a few miles.

    Not necessarily....

  18. 1- Alan Webb best mile is 3:53

Incorrect. Alan Webb is now a 3:50 miler (this month) and
the odds are if he keeps his motivation up he'll get Scotts
    3:47 American Record.

    usatoday.com2004
    06-20-webb- record_x.htm

I'd go for Webb. Armstrong I think is more of a shuffler
(stork) when running. Webb more fluid yet if Webb trained
with for about a month on a bike he could upset Armstrong.

I think Ullrich would be a better challenge. Did you know
that Jan Ullrich is a 4:06 miler?
