On my way to the bike shop recently, I reached a T junction: left was one road, right another to where I was going. To the left were some children, some sitting in, and some playing in the road. They do that round here.
On my way back by the same route, I saw the same children. They had had enough and got up to go their merry way. Each and every single one picked up a bike, wheeled it to the pavement and rode off *on*the*pavement*!
I still cannot get my head around it being OK to sit in the road (and near a junction at that), but not to cycle in it.

Easy! A child in the road is a vulnerable human being, and drivers will make every effort to avoid them. As soon as that child is on a bike, they suddenly become that much maligned animal - the cyclist. Therefore they are a target for motorists, and therefore it is safer to cycle on the pavement.
The above is tongue-in-cheek, before I get taken too seriously again :-)

Once when I was escorting my girls to a friends house, along with friend, on quiet housing estate cul-de-sac roads. As we approached the friends house, her mother came out of the front door and shouted to her daughter to get off the road and onto the pavement. I told my girls to stay on the road where they belonged. I was walking down the middle of the road at the time as well.
