Names is for tombstones, baby. Don't get hung up on brand names and
try a bunch of different bikes at reputable bike shops. Remember that
salespeople at all bike shops are going to be singing the brand party
lines and some may even try to sell you a bike that isn't suited for
your needs.

A rigid singlespeed with rim brakes is adequate for many in all kinds
of terrain. The best bang for the buck on a bike that will last will
be a rigid singlespeed. Getting hung up on what the magazines are
telling you is "in" would be the best thing to avoid.
