On my way home, after a Saturday night of Bicycle Jeopardy, I was
riding by the mall parking and stopped to pick up ~120 lbs. of honey.
It was 4 degrees, raining and windy when I thought I heard somebody
shouting. Off to my right I spotted a shape running across the parking
lot. Expecting a to be solicited by a crack addled panhandler with an
unbelievable story, I wasn't interested in stopping. Then I made out
the person was lost and seeking directions. A healthy blonde angelic
20 something from Victoria was befuddled by Heather Street's
discontinuous nature. Her destination was still two kilometers away
and two blocks south of my home.
I explained how to get there, as a bike would travel, when it started
raining harder. So, I shrugged and offered her a ride on the rack. I
was surprised when she accepted and straddled the rack without
hesitation.
I took it easy over the speed humps and picked the smoothest line
through the patches and potholes. I didn't want to leave her with
bruises or over stress the rack.
She thanked me for the ride but figured it was her karmic payback.
Sweet kid.
