long clappers and had his nose bloodied. It appears that he quickly
identified his 'attacker' and rode across the front of the peloton and back
down the road to execute some justice. (Not a great idea, and certainly

The clappers are the most obnoxious things thrown out by the publicity
caravan. They're really grating and annoying to listen to, and kids
love them. They should have flushed those long ago.

Those clappers are indeed a plague, but I suspect the fan may have actually
caught him with her hand or arm.

I don't know the race or the year, but Cipo once went off the front of
the field on a break. I guess people were all taken by surprise, and
as a joke, he turned around and rode back at the field. I don't
remember them DQ'ing him. They seem pretty good about bending the
rules for decent reasons (not sure jokes are one of them).

Just recalled that someone, Ullrich, maybe, actually turned around and rode
back down the chute after crossing the finish line in last year's tour. I
think he wanted to avoid the media. So it happens, I 'spose.

That happens a lot (well, sometimes) at mountain top finishes because it's
faster to the hotel that way than by bus. Maybe more at Giro and Vuelta
because it's less crowded.

ThunderStix. Totally a promotional item and thoroughly irritating. The
Pac-10 specifically banned them the year following their introduction at
football games.

Noise aside, anything that can extend the reach of a spectator toward the
racers should be disallowed along the course (excepting the Devil's
pitchfork). Out of control spectators have created a safety problem that is
ready to blow up in the Tour organizers faces.

René Vietto rode back in 1934, Abdel Kader Zaaf in 1950. Both became
immediately famous, so it's not such a bad career move from Kashechkin. On
the other hand, Schotte did it too in 1948, but the poor man had to be world
champion twice to became as famous as the two other guys.

We've certainly seen a harbinger of that with the unruly spectator trying
to get the tattoo of a BMW engine on his body, lol.

Actually I doubt anything will make a difference, even the death of a
spectator. I agree with you, something needs to be done sooner rather than
later about implements.

Seems to be many more flagpoles with multiple flags on them being hung out
over the road - several riders had to duck to avoid being un-horsed.

Wonder if the police arrested/detained a few of the more obstreperous fans
here and there if it would put a lid on it? Heck, hand out pepper spray to
all the cars and motorcycles and let 'em have at it. Sure would add to the
spectacle, lol.

On Tour 2005 on TV1 they were talking about it and Mattan remembered how
Eric Vanderaerden did it on a bet once.

Exaclty. ThunderStix are annoying as hell but they can't give you a
bloody nose. Her hand caught him. She was facing away from him and
never saw him coming. Stupid fan. Not too smart on the riders part to
be so close to a group of crazy people swinging thunderstix out over
the road.

Yes, as legend would have it, in 1934 Vietto rode back to find Antonin
Magne and gave him his bike helping him to win that year, and in 1950,
Zaaf fell asleep under a tree, riding the wrong way when he woke up.

Death of a spectator? It happens one every year or two! When I was on
Courcheval the year Pantani won there over Lance, they shut down the
road to riders HOURS early because the previous day someone rode their
bike under a semi. Most spectators thought it more an inconvenience to
their viewing pleasure than any sort of tragedy. Until they start
putting 6' wide Cattle-Catchers on the front of the lead motorcycles or
lining the climbs with barriers, it'll be an problem.

Yeah, guess you have to forgive one's initial reaction which is to go and
blame the fan, heh-heh.

As you say, it's up to the riders not to be so close whenever possible.
Same as with the musette bag incident - the other riders are now quick to
point out it was the rider's fault for cutting that corner too close.

Uh, but could we just go kick the crazy fan's ass just on principle,
