But wasn't she actually guilty, I mean she did have the drugs in her
possesion when searched. Yes there are lots of questions about the why
(there are much easier ways to get drugs into Bali than the airport) but
    not the actual possesion.

I think even our system (reasonable doubt) would have struggled to
acquit although she may have been able to go for sympathy from a jury.
I don't think the Australian media really helped her at all with their
    carry on.

She won't serve more than 2-3 years, and then the beauty-treatment-starved
women of Australia will be able to resume their lives.

well yeah she had the drugs.. so technically she was guilty and thats
all they needed.. Mind you the head judge has never aquited anyone.. and
I dont think their cops are that good.

On the other hand taking drugs from someplace they are worth 30000 or so
to a place where they are worth maybe 5000 and risking the death
sentance to do so. Can;t see a career in it myself

    My 2 cents worth

What was the outcome? I haven't exactly been watching the "watch us

    20 years.

Ummm by the rules she was guilty .. might even be convicted in Oz. But
economically it makes no sense. Clearly she was just unlucky. And one
cannot but think a jury would always have one person in it that would
    recognise that.

The ABC reported that the price of good quality pot is much higher in
Bali than Australia, due to the number of tourists wanting it, but that
could just be media speculation too.

  9. 20yrs & 6 mnths. Sounds abit harsh, but I suppose they're actively addressing illegal drugs in their country. Isn't this the sort of measures people here are looking for to "keep drugs off our streets & away from our children"?

If it was a snotty weedy little indonisan fellow discovered at Sydney airport with 4kgs would we arch up over him getting handed a 20yr sentence?

If she was innocent? Well it looks we're all going to be investing in locks, zip-ties or glad wrap when it comes to getting our passports out for a tirp.

Surprised that there isn't the backlash against baggage handelers by the general public that I thought there would be with this result.

Apparently in Bali tourists are much happier buying drugs from non indonesians and will pay more to do it so that they don't get caught by undercover police. I think that she might just be very hard done by but I am no way near totally sure that she is completely innocent. I don't understand how people can be 100% sure she is innocent. She had to carry her bogie board bag a short distance. You would think she would have notice something suspicious then.

    Jet lagged from the trip?
How long would it take to kick in that your boogie board bag had 4Kg
extra on board. Although I think she said her brother carried it over
    for her.

Did she realise and not know what to do, hence blocking the customs guy
    from opening the bag.?

Anyway, the approach taken by her defence has been getting a pasting for
months, by people with more experience.

And, unfortunately, not matter how "good and nice" you are, life can
deal you [censored] that screws your life anyway. So I have not been too

Just another example of the risks you take when you go to a cheap and
    nasty place.

Smuggle in some dope and it's twenty years.

Gee, what is so different in this country.
If you are some poor dumb sod employee who rips off stationery from you
company, how many years do you get?
Now, if you are the CEO and rip of your company, you get a paultry fine

Oh wait, murder a bicyclist and they almost buy you a medal.

Well, they have been doing worse to their own people for centuries.
What the fsck do you expect when you go there?

And why the head up your ass approach that it is all about "you". You
might like to chase up some figures on what nationalities thatactually
died in the Bali Bomb blast and the range of nationalities in Indonesian
    jails.

She just had publicity. As the judge said "why all the interest in this
    one?"

All I can say is: I wasn't there, I didn't hear or see the evidence. All I
got was the spin version reported here. I don't know if she's guilty,
    innocent or whatever.

I do know that when I travel I lock my bags. When they are searched I'll
answer "Yes, I packed them myself" because I don't let anyone else near
them. I insist on inspecting the locks for signs of damage before I allow
the search, and hand over a list of what is in the bag and the order in
which it was packed before the bag is opened. This time, I'll take digital
photos of the bag's contents just before it is closed and locked. I figure
that will help (not prove... just help) in case of interference, although
interference is a risk you take as soon as the bag leaves your sight. Never
had any trouble insisting on a search on my terms, but I reckon I've been
searched much more than my fair share. I must look suss...

Nope, it just shows they have the same legal wobbly as this country. The
allegged bomber just had a better legal team and probably an incompetent
national forensic team, which is why Aussie was so fast to offer assistance.

    Well OT for a.b. however...

No, it was a total balls up by the prosecuting authorities. He was not
prosecuted for any criminal offence, but rather under new anti-terrorism
regulations and found guilty (sentenced to death) but aquitted on appeal
because the regulations were retrospective. He still has not been tried for
the criminal act of murder of over 300 people. I think Marty's criticisms
are pretty fair - Corby seems pretty hard done by in comparison.
