  1. Yes, an oldie, but things are always changing in this area.

House contents insurance is up for renewal, the bikes are currently
covered under this and intend to continue this. Since we have moved and
every few years anyway I get other quotes I'm looking at the
    alternatives.

I'm currently with Nationwide, paying around GBP5 month for about GBP
1100 of 'all risks' cycle cover in rural Cambridgeshire.

Any recommendations for companies currently doing good cover? I'm not so
much interested in prices per se as this varies so much with location,
price of eggs, colour of your underpants etc. Just general pointers of
the 'I use these because' type for me to look into..

We changed to M&S, because they'll do up to £4K bikes (that's individual
bikes, not sum total) as standard with no need to quote specifics or pay
an extra premium. The Small Print looks pretty amenable too, rather
than "we'll pay a depreciated value only if your bike was cemented into
the foundations and guarded by a platoon of crack marines and
    minefields" sort of thing.

Caveat: We haven't tested them "in anger", hope we don't have to...

Aside from that, they were actually cheaper than the other quotes we
got. AA was 2nd prize, Bank of Scotland wasn't too bad, Direct Line
lost the business because their renewal quote was a /huge/ increase on
    the previous year.

Nationwide for me; covers the bike anywhere in the world and costs no
more (or didn't last year if you have the 'plus' contents policy). Also
covers all your personal possessions so you save on normal holiday
insurance as well. It came with the fixed rate mortgage but we have
kept it even after the "tie-in" period ended. They do change their
insurers from time to time though so worth checking the policy.

With M&S, you can choose the colour of your underpants too...

  5. What about personal liability insurance? OK if you wreck your bike, well,
life's a [censored]. However, scraping down the side of a couple of jags before
you fall off, causing a motorcyclist brain damage, that's a far more serious
    matter....

Join the CTC and you're covered (up to £5M) as part of the membership
    package.

(Note this is completely different to the "Cyclecover" cycle hardware
insurance offered as an optional service by the CTC, about which I have
moaned and whinged at some length concerning its cost on this very ng).

    Did someone mutter CTC membership?

Although this choice may be overridden on steep descents with hairpin

  9. I submit that on or about Tue, 13 Sep 2005 09:34:06 +0100, the person
known to the court as Peter Clinch <[email hidden]> made a
statement (<[email hidden]> in Your Honour's bundle) to
    the following effect:

They are, however, almost exactly twice the price of my existing
insurer, and the difference is sufficient to cover my CTC policy. Bah!

They were the cheapest quote we got, so they seem to be working on the
"add your birth date and divide by the number you first thought of"
quote system... I wonder if GNER advance booking fares use the same
    algorithm? ;-/

BTW - I just re-insured with the Nationwide (I don't have an expensive
bike) however I saw that they have removed the 1500 ukp limit that they
    used to have.
