  1. This place is in Raleigh, and has been around for a long time. They serve a
lot of vegetarian fare--and in fact, this pasta dish is the heaviest thing
    on the menu.

It is shrimp and bay scallops with onions, a bit of spinach, bits of
tomatoes, small bits of feta cheese bits, and the lightest sauce--thin but
with just enough body, barely tomato-based. I wish I knew exactly what is in
the sauce. I'm sure there's olive oil, basil, and a little garlic. It could
be that this is all there is in it: simple is so good. It may be a matter of
proportion--I tend to be heavy-handed with the garlic, which would not work
at all with this dish. They served it with a basket of sour-doughish bread
in a variety of flavors, one pesto, one orange as though it had a bit of
tomato in it, one plain. And they serve iced herbal teas, a nice change. I
had red zinger, nice and strong. they served it with a syrup pitcher full of
cold sugar water, another thing I have not seen before. It was a really good
lunch, and the best I've had out in a while.

AND--on our way home we cruised through an old neighborhood to look at the
spring flowers and such, and there in front of a sweet little bungalow was a
whistle-clean 20-inch monitor with a sign that said "Free Monitor! Works!"
My friend heaved it into the back of my care and hauled it in for me, and I
hooked it up and it's GREAT! Mine is okay, but only a 17-inch. I think
somebody must have gotten a new flat panel. SCORE!

    Just speculating:

    Things that might be in such a sauce: vodka; white wine;
white wine vinegar; a light (as opposed to dark green) olive
oil; or a nut oil such as walnut or hazlenut.

It's "regardless". No such word as irregardless.

Right, Dave. The people who named the Raleigh, North Carolina restaurant
knew that. I think they might have named it "tongue-in-cheek."

Well Bless your down-to-earth heart! That was a very charming reply.

Now I regret my sarcasm. 🙁

    Mea culpa too.

You know, I think you are on to something with the nut oil
suggestion. There was something light and smooth and rich in
it. I know they used good olive oil, but I bet they added a bit
of nut oil. Do you cook with nut oil?

Sometimes, yet. I just the other day got some parsnip /
carrot / sage ravioli from a local past shop, and drizzled
some hazlenut oil on it. 95% of the time I'll use olive
oil, but sometimes a nut oil is just right.

Walnut oil on butter lettuce is another classic, but I
again I only do it a fraction of the time.

Amen. That particular mispronunciation seems to have emerged during the
start of the Iraq War AFAIR. I felt the way you do. Perhaps it's a hoard
of weapons that smells like death.
My newest annoyance, is the foo word 'conversate' which is leaking into
T.V. discussion and causing me to switch channels.

Oh dear. More linguistic perversion. When will it end? I'm still not
over "let's dialogue" rather than "let's talk".
