dear swimmers :
have been doing laps for 20 years....
have tried to keep trainng and workout shedules.....
within last year have focused on racking up MILES.....
anyone INTO that....??????
trying to crack 250 this year....
365 in 2004......
I keep track of my yardage, but from that I was able to calculate the number of mile. I came up with 390 miles last year, and I am on track to exceed that this year.
If you do that, you may be interested in some of the USMS fitness events: usms.orgfitnessOpen ↗ where you not only keep track of your mileage, but you get to plot it along a map, as if you were swimming along florida keys, or some other pictoresque location.

I swim 10-12 miles a week on average, mixing distance and sprint training. So that's about 500-600 miles a year. I think maybe i should keep a log for 2004, just to be accurate.
Estimates are about 658 hours (+-) but this is just calculated by an average of what I did each week from memory, though I'm quite consistent in my habits. I love the pool--it keeps me young. Sometimes I dream I have discovered new lap pools around here and I'm as exhilarated as I'd imagine most people would be if they found a bunch of money scattered in unexpected places.

is DAKITTY involved in any of these MASTERS swims.....???? was curious about OPEN WATER events....... actualy have a YEARLY swim around MANHATTAN......somewhat of a SWIMMING marathon thing......
thought it would take 3-4 years to get up to 1000 miles.......how long did it take SWIM**GIRAFFE to get there....????? and WHAT was the progression????? (( how much increase year to year.....????? ))
I am stuck in Indiana and my town needs more pools than just Purdue because Purdue closes too often. For example, for the next 3 weeks it is only open Monday-Friday 11:30-2PM....rotten if you have other things you need to do during the day. So, today, as on all Saturdays, I was stuck at the Y as I will be for the next 3 straight weeks during Mon-Friday as well. The water must have been at least 87-88 degrees. I don't know how I survived 8000 yds, but I did, and then spent the next few hours rehydrating. So, when I dream of finding good pools, it truly is exhilerating!

If I calculated this correctly, an estimate for me is 1,300 miles in a year +/- a 100.
Marianne.
When I was in my early 40's in Oz, I was doing about 1.5 million meters per year, which is about 1000 x 1500. That was hard training. 1,300 miles per year is quite an accomplishment, even if it is just lap swimming.
I swim about 3000m every morning in the pool, and 2-3 times a week I do a 2nd workout in the afternoon. that would be about 9 workouts a week x 3000m = 27 kilometers a week x 52... that would add up to some 1400 kilometers in a year.
This is my 5th month of swimming.

Thanks. Yes, it is just lap swimming, but I do a lot of other things too....running when my back allows, elliptical trainer, biking, and some weights. Oh yea, and when it is not freezing outside...lots of dog walking.

Purdue's pool is wonderful....a 50 meter 8 lane pool plus a 25 y 6 lane diving well with 10 meter platform (as well as lower ones). But that is the ONLY decent pool. There are some local high school pools but they are not typically open to the public (I know the coaches, and if there is room and Purdue is closed and if the coach is there I can get in--lots of "If"s)....but other than that, the choices are dismal...HOT Ys and a few health clubs that are useless (1 is unguarded and off by itself and is under a removable dome and the other is more like a bathtub). I am pushing for a decent recreation center to be built here with a decent pool...one that does not close at every semester break, is not 88 degrees, and has a lifeguard. Is this too much? Instead, fast food places and fine dining and movie theaters keep going up. Today I heard that Indiana now ranks # 1 in the nation for those in the mildly obese or worse range. I am not surprised based on the ideas of "leisure activities" that most people here seem to support...at least in this section of Indiana. Bloomington Indiana has a wonderful YMCA.

INDIANA seems to have some INTENSE focus on competitive swimming.....
UNIVERSITY OF INDIANA was always in the TOP echelons on a NATIONAL level.....
like OKLAHOMA in football.... or U.C.L.A. or KENTUCKY in baskeball.....
curious how ELABORATE and technologically advanced HIGH END pools really ARE......????
what is SET**UP at PURDUE????? lanes ** lengths ** features, ETC.
have this dream of pools being MORE high tech.....interactive>>>>> in water music..... interactive coaching mechanism**muses......LAP counters..... LED lap timers...... progressive challenge courses...... some kind of computer interface that keeps your workout records and gives feedback on learning curves..... if we can spend 100s of BILLIONS on weapons .... a few on FITNESS might be warrantted.....
