    Hi,

    New to road cycling. I'm riding a brand new Klein Aura XV with full Ultegra.

    Lately i notice the chain rubbing on the inside of the front derailleur on the down stroke with my left foot only. It doesn't rub on the down stroke with my right.

    This happens when I'm on the large chainring in the front, and on the third from the largest in the back (as well as the second largest, etc.). That doesn't seem like too much chain angle, so i'm concerned the frame or bottom bracket is flexing. I think I can actually see the chain shift left and rub the derailleur when I pedal down with my left foot. Is this normal for a bike like this?

    The bike has 140 miles on it. Any ideas? Should I take this puppy into the shop?

    Minor adjustment after a break in period is normal. The rubbing you describe can probably be fixed in a few minutes at your LBS. Take it to the people you bought it from. I've never known a LBS who weren't happy to have a look at a bike they sold one of their customers.

    I noticed your in Baltimore. What shop did you buy the bike from? Cables "stretch" (housing compresses and seats in place) when new. This adds slack to the cable and can affect shifting. Like the last reply mentioned take it back for a tune-up. Make sure they check everything over. Majority of shops here in B'more give tune-ups for at least one full year.

    Hi KGnagey,

    I didn't actually buy my bike in Baltimore. I bought it in Alexandria at Spokes, Etc. I work down there. They've been great, and I did have to take it back once already. The manfacturer had the internal cables twisted. There's the down side to internal cable routing. 🙂

    Locally though, I like Race Pace in Ellicott City.

    All bikes flex, just some more than others. But that's not what this sounds like. This problem sounds like a simple 5 minute cable adjustment.🙂

    That seems to be the concensus. I hope you're all right. I don't want a frame that flexes so much so soon.

    OK, I've got the verdict.

    The bike is fine. I was the problem all along...sort of. The front derailleur has a mid-way point that I could not engage because:

    1. I didn't know it was there because I couldn't feel it
    2. It's so new and unused that it's really stiff

    He lubed it and it's working much better now. With that adjustment, I'll get no chain rub. Problem solved.
