After having had extensive experience with an assortment of jackasses and
morons on this group, I can say that I now favor a moderated group myself
even if it is only a kind of bulletin board. The ultimate degeneracy is to
be found on a group like Monkey Island. That group is a board and is
moderated I presume, so those two characteristics will not necessarily save
us from ourselves. I think the key is a good moderator. Mr. Ball, the
moderator of BROL, may be that, although I don't like him because he is a
liberal and takes no pains to hide his political prejudices, at least he
never did when he was posting to ARBR.

ARBR will continue to soldier on, somewhat the wiser due to all the
political posting and off-topic subject threads. I hope we can maintain a
high intellectual level in any event even if we do like to wander off-topic
a bit.

For what it is worth, there are very serious recumbent riders who are
not interested in off-topic discussions, who have serious concerns about
the moderation taking place on certain forums (note plural).

various regions that are involved with recumbent cycling.

I wonder just how interesting a group would be that was devoted to just a
single recumbent model and/or brand. It seems you would pretty much exhaust
the subject in a short time. The chief danger of any newsgroup in my
experience is the boredom that can easily set in after a few months. No
danger of that sort of thing ever happening here on good old ARBR.

There are lots of groups out there that are devoted to a single model. Topics tend to run to the technical side, at least for the one with which I have experience. You probably wouldn't like them; they're usually moderated to prevent them from becoming troll or SPAM traps.

Why would anyone ever want to discuss a third party on another forum where
the subject of the thread is not available for response? No doubt because
they are all a bunch of crazy [censored]. This group keeps me plenty busy and
there really are no true bona fide idiots like that on this group. We are
only pretend idiots here on ARBR. The truth is that I really do have to
watch my blood pressure and this group drives it as high as I dare let it
go.
