That will be a problem. When you're shipping your own personal items, you have to prove that you
owned it previously to having it shipped (for example, taking it on vacation then shipping it back
home), otherwise, they will tax you to death or confiscate it (if you refuse to pay the taxes) if
they find out you just bought it and you're shipping it home.

Isn't it possible to bring some dumpster bike with you, leave it somewhere in America, and take a
new bike out? I've never done it, but have heard of it working. I don't know the countries involved,
but if the customs report is just marked "bike" it shouldn't be too hard.

Or, if SDC has any US friends, they could buy the bike and UPS it over...couldn't they?

Yep, that will work, just make sure you have some proof that you previously owned the junk bike and
claim its value as the same value of the new bike, they usually don't open up boxes to know the
difference if its a Walgoose bike or a custom IF Deluxe.

I think you would have to claim it as a "gift" when shipping and give it a really, really low value,
like claiming its a "gift" of a $50-$75 bike so that they won't charge taxes. Or if his US friends
visit often, they could just bring the bike with them.

I was going to buy the bike, get it all nice and dirty, and then cross the border.

I could have someone UPS a bike over but customs and duties would still apply. They basically add
15% provincial and federal tax and another 15% roughly in customs I'm not sure how they would
calculate the value of the bike if none is declared. The person or LBS shipping the bike could
declare a minimal value.

I heard that if you USPS the bike over you can get around that because the regular mail
bypasses customs.

I could buy the bike, get a phony receipt then just pay minimal duties on it at the border. The SISS
for example does not look like an expensive bike and could easily pass off as being worth $100.

Another point is that when you are traveling, they look at what you are bringing across the border
differently than when you are moving. I know a few people that moved and its basically an
inquisition even way before 9/11.

As for the dumpster idea...I guess it sounds good but I have driven across the border tons of times
and no one has ever taken inventory of what I had. Plus remember you do not pass exiting
customs...only on entry. So you leave canada and pass US customs..no canadian customs..and when you
leave the states you only pass canadian customs.

In some places its different. I remember last year I was in the UAE and entering Oman. It took us
3-4 hours to leave the UAE. Oman then did not want to let us in and we could not get back in the
UAE..so basicall stuck in no man's land for a day. It all ended well though.

I have usually stoped at the cdn side on my way to the US to file a declaration of things like
camera's laptops and other items that may be questioned on the way home.

its been a few years now but it was worth the trouble on a few occasions.
