  1. The final DH into town! Tons of loose gravely fun and I get to be in part
of the video (I gave the camera to a faster rider)!

Actually it was more like some trail on those rocks.

I dunno about you, but I was thinking, "Why isn't anyone pedaling and why is
everyone sitting down?" The pace was okay at times, but you can never have
too much speed, even with rocks! 😉 Maybe I'm not used to it because I'm a
    Floridian...

    Nice vid otherwise.

OK. Point taken and let me explain.

It is very hard to see the degree of incline in the video. It was steep,
very steep. The rocks you see are not attached to the ground. In other
words, they are moving with the bike. You'll notice on the way down, the
first rider (me) kicks a rather large rock out to the side. That was
happening quite often. The first two riders (me and the other guy) are not
experts. I don't mind a little speed now and then, but the terrain was
shaky. There are points at which I reached a pretty fair clip, but the guy
in front was not to keen on technical DH. I don't like passing so I slowed
down for him. I also have two children that need a working father to
support them. Sometimes you have to weigh the chance of ending up in the
hospital or making a living. When I was 20 it would have been a different
choice, but at 40 you think more sanely. Well, at least I try to.

The guy shooting the video for this scene is a very accomplished rider,
which is why he wasn't content to sit behind everyone else for too long.
He's dong 35+ on the loose stuff once he passes me.

There was no need for much pedaling here. You take your hands off the
brakes and you go pretty fast. I am sure if I were a DHer/Slalomer/MTXer I
would have been pedaling some parts.

Why do you need to stand on the DH? I was always taught to put your weight
to the back and on the real steep stuff almost lay on the seat. I would
almost think that standing on that loose stuff would cause one to lose
    balance.

I always stand on descents if I'm trying to go at any kind of reasonable
pace. It gives you much more room to move your bike and body around to make
weight adjustments as the terrain changes. Sure you've got some suspension
travel, but not the kind of travel you can generate with legs and arms on
top of whatever travel your bike gives.
I generally only sit a DH if I'm just cruising or if I got too tired from
standing (like on a continuous 3000' DH).

Ah... the age/kids thing is an issue, as I'm the 20-year-old you speak of 😉

If I were ever going down an steep(er) descent, I would be off the back with
the saddle at my stomach or lower abdomen. Then again, after a long
descent, I'd probably want to sit at least some of the time...

Too bad there aren't any long descents around here 🙁
