Just finished my bike!

little back and forth and I realized that not only was it just like my
old bike, it WAS my old bike. (He also had an old funny bike of mine,
so there was no doubt.) He was just using it as an everyday bike, and
had no particular attachemnt to it, so he was very cool about
negotiating it's return. Good karma getting reunited with my all time
favorite bike 20 years after I first bought it!

It had spend many years in a damp basement, and had some nasty rust
around the bottom bracket, so I got it bead-blasted and a friend at a
car body place sprayed it for me. Not a show winner, but it sure looks
nice to me. I've got some NOS Benotto decals, but I like it clean for
now.

Gorgeous! Man that must feel great. I got a couple bikes I kick myself
for getting rid of as well. Heh, that Benotto bar tape brings back
memories. It wasn't very comfy, but it sure looked spangly and fresh
compared to the dowdy cloth alternative. 25mm NOS tubs?? Slot cleats
for what I'm assuming are 12+ feet? Crazy!

It's not powdercoat, it's water based (as I understand it) paint
partially because that was what was easily available, partially
because I wanted details like the Campagnolo text on the dropouts to
remain visible. I live in Norway. A local maritime shop bead blasted
it for $70, and the body shop primed it, I sanded it, and then the
body shop painted and clearcoated for $100.

I think it was about $400. I went into the shop at least 50 times to
drool over it before I scraped up the money!

The tires are new. From Challenge:

Size 15 US. The narrow cage of track pedals makes the straps pinch too
much if they are tight enough to be useful. Road cages work out fine.
Have to use old shoes though. My modern road shoes don't fit on the
pedals nor in the toeclips.

The Benotto tape sure looks sweet in white with the white pearl paint.
cheap too!

I'm certainly no expert in such things, but looking at the tight
clearance and the shallow rake, it looks 100% track to my amateur
eyes. I'm guessing it was drilled for a brake at some point. Must have
been a scary tight fit.

It is the original fork that came with the bike in '86. Hard to
measure, but the rake is between 25-30mm, so that is pretty track
specific, but the blades are oval, and the crown is drilled from the
factory. Who knows!

when i was a club rider at about that time, short rake forks and steep
head tubes were quite popular on time trial machines.

if this were my steed, i'd look for a "traditional" track fork, i.e.
undrilled, round blades. it would be the final touch.
