Today I jumped onto the footpath to get past the cars... there's a
section of Lytton Rd where, for about 500m, the cars stop start and the
drivers like to do anything they can to stop me lanesplitting, so I just
take the footpath and then drop back onto the road further up, usually
near the bus stop bay, where there is more room for me to merge. Today,
there was glass all over the footpath - broken bottles. Must be
deliberate. Normally if I ride through a little glass, I keep going. I
might brush my gloves over the tyre, knowing that it doesn't help at
all, but it makes me feel better. I might have a quick look at the tyres
next time I stop at lights. I very rarely stop to check straight away.
Today, I had Big Doubts, so as soon as I passed the glass I stopped,
dismounted and checked my rear wheel, and sure enough there was a small
piece of glass that had cut into the tyre and was working its way deeper
and would have no doubt caused me a flat before I got to my destination
half an hour away. I dug it out and had no problems on the way to uni,
which was good as I had a physio appointment to get to.
So... is this karma? Is it because I sold my car? Have I pleased the
puncture deities?
