While in Ketosis I was not hungry ever. I actually forgot to eat. I was
able to walk on the treadmill every day and felt really good despite
some pretty severe health problems. I've been on Atkins 7 weeks. After
doing only 15 Carbs daily avg. for a month, I added low GI veges and
occaisionally Macadamia nuts, 20-25 Carbs. I gained two pounds and
cannot get back into Ketosis. I really am hungry most of the time now,
especially at night.
I've gone back to being tired and sleepy and just don't have the
strength nor the oxygen to exercise.
I have Dr appt tomorrow for thyroid testing and cholesterol.
I still haven't given up, Atkins has to work for me. I lost 4 pounds
not counting the two I gained back.
Is it possible that I might have to stay on a 20-carb maintainence
plan for life?
Could I possibly survive on that?
I do not miss bread, pasta, cake, and starches, not anymore. Just the
thought of never being able to eat any fruits, no honey-dew melon,
strawberries, peaches, nor orange juice......it's very depressing.
Please, God don't let me relapse.

How much do you want to lose? what are your stats?
How tall are you?Becky P.

Becky, thanks for responding. You are the only one so far. I got very
little response/support from my other post. I am Senior Citizen, 4' 11"
lost from 150 down to 144. It was very hard for me. I gained 2 lbs back
when I increased Carbs.
Evidently I am extremely metobolic-resistant. I had Thyroid Tests
today and will get results and/or medication Tues. When I posted
previously askng for support from others who are possibly MR and
Disabled. One poster, no two, told me to drink LOTS of water. I have
been medically instructed to drink what is necessary to quench my
thirst, but that I should not ever force myself. I have Pulmonary Edema
and Asthma after losing one of my lungs to cancer. I must take very
potent RXed diuretics daily. Another poster said that I needed more
exercise...two miles per day. If the truth were known, I can barely
manage 10 minutes on treadmill at present. They told me to cut the
Aspartame, and it's gone.
And don't disregard J C the know-it-all. He insisted that I do not
have under-active Thyroid, just an over-active fork. He hasn't a clue;
should sweep the dust from his own back door. The only thing over-active
with him is his mouth.
Anyway, I suppose most everyone in this group is young and healthy
with very little medical problems. Please just overlook my two posts, I
am tryng to find a group with Senior Citizens who are doing Atkins.
I asked if it was okay to be a part of this group, but it's alright,
I changed my mind.Faye

Have you tried eating less yet?
Of course not.

Correction - While in ketosis food becomes about fueling your body
to prevent hunger from ever occuring rather than a compulsion to
handle existing hunger. Think about the difference between your
statement and mine. It can take a while to make that attitude
adjustment. No hurry, just work at it.Quoted message said:

doing only 15 Carbs daily avg. for a monthOn Atkins you start at 20 and move up to 20 on day 15. You have
been doing a low carb plan of your own design. Not a bad thing
but Atkins is something specific. If you tell people you're on
Atkins you should actually be on Atkins.Quoted message said:

Did the sticks go all the way to biege? They start out dark so
most newbies think only dark means positive. Not true. Anything
but biege is positive. But returned hunger probably means you
did indeed fall out of ketosis.Double check that you are indeed out of ketosis at 25 - Spend a
full week with negative tests. Do NOT use a 1-day time scale
for thinking you're out of ketosis. There's too much uncertainty
in counts, too much failure of the sticks, etc for you to be
certain in under a week. But once the week is up, go back into ketosis on schedule.

I think you answered your own question:
Quoted message said:
I do not miss bread, pasta, cake, and starches, not anymore.
Quoted message said:
Just the
thought of never being able to eat any fruits, no honey-dew melon,
strawberries, peaches, nor orange juice......it's very depressing.OWL isn't maintenance and CCLL isn't CCLM. If you must remain at
20 to be in the OWL phase because you fall out of ketosis at 20,
then you'll have few fruit options while you're losing. That
phase does not last forever.Do NOT make judgements about your CCLL. People are born with
whatever CCLL they were born with. It con't be changed by railing
over what you can't eat. Look at what you CAN eat and celebrate
that. Also keep a constant eye out for increasing variety. No matter
what your CCLL there is an infinite variety available to you once
you get used to shopping for it. It will take time and practice
to see that variety but it is out there.Look at it this way:
Some folks have to be pressured off of Induction for safety
reasons. They stay at 20 because they *like* it. They stay at
20 because it is *easy*. Your CCLL is 20 so your OWL phase is
at 20. For you there will never be pressure to go higher until
you are at goal. You get to like it easy as long as you care to
continue losing.Having a higher CCLL can be rope to hang yourself. Once at 70
it is so easy to go to 100 and gain. Not an issue for you. See
the positive. -

Hi Faye,
I'm sorry you didn't get a good response to your post; I'd guess
you're right and most people are younger, etc... who knows? I'm also
younger, but my mother is doing Atkins with me, and she's having
trouble - and she's 4'11'' like you. She's also taking various
medications, so I wouldn't be surprised if that's a factor. The only thing I could add besides meds is a possible food intolerance
(dairy, nuts, caffeine?), that could be interfering. I haven't been
doing Atkins long enough to be an expert on any of this. I would just
go back to basics (under 20), and discuss with your doctor.Good luck

Doug, thanks, and I'm trying to get it right. I have copies of both
Atkins Diet Books, the first one was published in 1973, I believe. The
original diet was zero carbs (which is almost impossible) on Induction.
I was sorta combining the two diets to come up with one that would work
for me. I have read both books, and I forget which one said what. LOL
The Ketosis Test strips never turned dark, it was always pink. But
now of course it's beige.
Your post was very helpful.Faye

The original diet was zero carbs ... on Induction. No it was NOT. Never has been, ever. The counting method has
changed far more over the editions than the actual food eaten.
The biggest change in the food eaten in the early weeks from
the 1972 edition all the way until a year after the 2002 edition
was the switch the net carbs that greatly increases the minimum. The 1972 ignores all incidentals like eggs and decafe coffee
and so on that tends to add up to 5ish per day. The 1972
ignores all veggies on the salad list that tends to add up to
10 total or 5 net. So the amount of carbs eaten in week 1 on
the 1972 directions is 15 total or 10 net and it moves up to
20 total (identical to the 1993-2002 plan) or 15 net in week
two. It moves up to 25 total and somewhere near 20 net
(identical to 2003 on) in week three.Quoted message said:
(which is almost impossible)
Exactly.
Quoted message said:
I was sorta combining the two diets
Since the actual food specified in the directions is identical
by week 2, combining them is trivial: Pick either book and
follow those directions and the food you'll eat is a maximum
of one week's difference from the other book. The one and
only difference in the food specified is the *counting* not
the food once you're in week 2.Quoted message said:
The Ketosis Test strips never turned dark, it was always pink. But
now of course it's beige.Pink is positive. It takes ONE reading to be certain that you
are in ketosis because the sticks never give a false positive.Biege is negative. It takes a full week of negative
readings to be certain that you are out of ketosis because the
sticks occasionally give a false negative and it takes a
bunch of occasionally's in a row to be certain. The caveat
in being certain you're negative is the physical symptoms are
more accurate than the sticks. Not everyone can tell their
physical symtpoms, but if you can you don't get false negatives. It definitely looks like your OWL cruise level is 20.

Anyway, I suppose most everyone in this group is young and healthy
with very little medical problems. All I could think of, while reading your second post, is, "why are
you asking us what you should be doing?". It seems to me, with your
medical history, you really should be talking to your doctor, who
might be able to refer you to a nutritionist, for guidance. It hardly
seems safe, to me, for you to take advice from a bunch of strangers,
who may or may not know what they're talking about, when your health
is so obviously at risk. You have way too many medical issues to
consider, to take advice from anyone but a healthcare professional. I
implore you to seek answers to your questions from someone qualified
to give you safe and appropriate answers.Lee

Short women, especially with less than 50 pounds to lose, have to keep
a closer eye on total calories than taller people, or people with
a large amount to lose. Maintenance calories are lower for a very
short person than an average or tall person. It can be easy to go
over maintenance calories snacking on too much cheese or too many nuts.168/125/125 LC since 2/18/97 maintaining since 3/17/99
