  1. Is there a compact crank that will fit an older Klein with a pressed in
square taper bottom bracket? Current crank is a Shimano 600 double.

    What is the spindle length?

TA Zephyer with 110mm BCD would work...Also other more modern TA
models..can't remember the name. Older Ritchey 110 cranks that were
    made for 113mm square taper.

108, according to the Klein manual, 1995/96 Quantum Pro.

Campy will also work but you will need a new spindle and the driveside
bearing or both have to be inset about 2mm.

Campy will also work. You will need a new spindle (and bearings most
likely). The bearings will both have to be inset 2mm from what I
    recall.

Early 90s XT 110 bolt triples work fine with a 113 JIS bb as compact
doubles. I think that the 110 bolt pattern doubles made by
Stronglight also use 113 JIS bb.

And very nice cranks they are. But the OP has a 108mm spindle.

Think he needs to measure it himself. The crank he said he has used a
113mm BB spindle, not 108mm. 108mm would have brought the small ring
really close to the fat stays on this bike and may have prevented the
FD from having enough inward travel, again on a frame with big aluminum
    tubes.

Thanks for the interest, here is a link to the Klein owners manual PDF.

Info is on page 24. Bike is a Quantum Pro 95/96, BB is stated to be 108X16.
Note at bottom of page indicates that this "bold" spindle must be inset 3mm
from the drive side. Can I assume that would yield an effective length (as
far as the right side is concerned) of 105? This is a friends bike, looks I
need to go measure. I wonder if the bb shell is narrower than normal. The
bike has been sitting for years. BB seems smooth. What I know for sure is
that the current crankset is Ultegra 600 double, square taper. Any chance
that a Srtonlight Impact would bolt on?

Yeah, I wondered about that, too. But, assuming it's the OEM spindle,
    could Klein be that sloppy?
