I had a follow up e-mail in December asking me to identify the type of
lock I had as they couldn't identify it from the key number but with
other things going on I only got round to replying last week. So
waiting to see.

I completed the online form in mid Nov but haven't heard back yet. I
also emailed Kryptonite at the same time to query whether the replacement
for my EV lock will fit my Barbed Wire cable. I got a reply at the end of
Dec ... the new lock's not compatible.

LOCK EXCHANGE PROGRAM UPDATE
January 11, 2005

As the New Year starts, we'd like to give you an update on the Lock Exchange
Program. Kryptonite has sent over 25,000 postage paid call tags and we've
replaced nearly that many locks!

If you are still waiting for your lock, we appreciate your patience and have
a few tips to help the process go more smoothly.

1. Please do not register more than once; that actually slows down the
process. We are sending out call tags as soon as products are available to
ship to customers.

2. Please do not send your locks back to Kryptonite or to the warehouse
without receiving a UPS call tag. If locks arrive without the proper tags we
may not have a lock at that time to immediately replace it.

3. Please print the UPS label when you receive notification that it is
available for you to print. The email link for the labels are only valid for
10 days, but you have 90 days to use the label. If you do not print the
label in 10 days it becomes invalid and we need to issue another one; this
will further delay receipt of your lock.

4. UPS will send a preliminary email to you notifying you to expect receipt
of another email within 3 business days with a link for the postage paid
call tag. If you do not receive the second email with that link from UPS
within 5 business days, please call Kryptonite's customer service at
781-828-6655.

5. If you are a Kryptonite dealer, do not use the online form to register
your tubular cylinder inventory. Dealers, please contact Kryptonite customer
service at 781-828-6655 for a special exchange form.

We appreciate your loyalty and patience during this challenging time. Please
know that we continue to work around the clock to get a new lock to everyone
who has signed up for the Lock Exchange Program.

Can you still buy Kryptonite locks. I was in a few Edinburgh bike shops today
looking for a new one and /none/ had any in stock.

Given the possibility of buying a dud one I guess I would only buy from a big
supplier anyway.

away you'll need to buy another to replace it (if you ever used the old
one), so you don't need the new Kryptonite lock when it turns up,
although I suppose you could sell it on eBay! Kryptonite should really
have made the new locks available at stores so an immediate exchange
could take place, and it would save a fortune on postage costs.
However, this way they know a lot of people won't be arsed to return
their locks and they might sell a few interim replacements in the meantime.

The problem with these locks - and the Kensington locks for notebook
computers - has been known about for years.

Note - I'm not affected by this personally, as my New York Lock 3000
doesn't use a cylinder key.

I just wish they'd hurry up and replace my pair of locks. While I'm happy to
lock the fixie up with a simple cable lock, since it's too weird[1] for
anyone to pinch, I don't really like leaving the tourer locked with
something that fragile. That said, I did leave it locked up with a dodgy
kryptonite lock for a couple of years without ill result.

Heh, I was stopped at some lights earlier this week and a crew/posse/gang[1]
crossed the road, one of the making the "well gay" comment. Personally, I
care not at all because I can outrun them all with ease on the same ~66"
fixie.

Why bother with all this messing about with UPS shipments label. Just go to
the shop where you bought it and demand your money back. Fitness for purpose
is not time limited in the legislation. It is easy to prove the lock is not
fit, the manufacturer has admitted it.

I should admit I chatted to my friend in the LBS and said I was not going to
force him to take it back. I want to maintain a good relationship with them.

However if enough people returned the locks to the shops the UK distributor
would probably get the message and set up a proper UK exchange program via
retail outlets.
