I have decided to go for the maximum protection offered by the Kryptonite New York U-Lock, as I'll be leaving my brand new Dawes Horizon around university. Only problem it I can't actually find a retailer that sells it!
Wiggle is the only online retailer I know of, and they only have the various chans from the New York range. My LBS only have the ABUS locks, and don't seem to have the "15 out of 10" security rating model at that.

the abus is a much better lock - and is designed to offer protection to alll the common ways of breaking the lock (freeze spray, wedging, barrel rumblers etc)
i got the manhatten model and its incredibly tough - u can get two for the price of one biggy and have double protection 🙂

You mean to say the New York U-Lock doesn't offer this protection? I don't know the details of it, but I find this unlikely.

A New York U-Lock is only ten pounds more than the Manhattan, which retails for £49.99 at wiggle.

I use this lock, suggest for Max security you team it with a Kryptonite cable to loop around your front wheel then threaded through back wheel with the eye in the cable end threaded onto the lock. Also useful where you want to lock your bike to something too large for the lock, just put the cable around the object and thread both eyes onto the lock secured to the frame. peter

With all due respect: here in Holland I saw a so called "modus operandi" (the way of doing things, so to speak) research paper on bicycle thieves. One of the categories interviewed were professional bike thieves. None of them ever used anything like freeze spray or something similar. Moreover, most of them had specialized in one or two certain types of lock.

For this reason it's advisable to use two locks, say a D lock with a straight key and a super-thick cable lock with a cylindrical key. Not many of them do both kinds. Or so it was put to me, anyway.
