Errmmm, would it be possible to suggest, very diffidently and politely,
that test post might usefully be directed to <URL:news:uk.test>? If it's
no inconvenience, of course.

There's a Moarmotte thread here?
Just to bring it back on topic, what sort of time are you thinking of aiming
for and what sort of training did you have in mind before going?

Not aiming for any time; my clubmate is a lot better at hills than me
so will go ahead and take photos, we just want to get round before dark
or whenever they kick us off, is there a maximum time? As regards
training, what you said before, lots of hills, I have devised a regular
course around Ashdown Forest for the evenings, a bit of TT'ing, my own
100k AUK ride (twice if possible; 3200m) and build up to the Dales
Grimpeur and another very hilly 100 in June.

Sounds sensible. I can strongly recommended the bit of TT'ing - you'll
be working hard uphill for a long time so it's got to get practice
at riding at a hight effort level in.

Try a gentle tour in Scotland.. plenty of longish hills there and very
good pubs too.
Belach na Ba a couple of times and you'll be ready for anything...

funny you should mention that; I was talking to someone on the train
last night about the lack of proper alpine zig zag hills in the UK (Box
Hill is the only one I know) and he said that the Belach was one; he
also thought it was a doddle and did it on a shopping bike last time; I
assume we are talking the same one, near Torridon?

Yes its near Torriden. I did it last year with some C+ chaps, it was
easier than the reports make out, though I was it pretty good shape
last August.

Not really surprising. We have a lack of Alpine mountains. Around
here in (South Wales) the higher roads top out around 400m so there is
only enough time for a couple of hairpins and you are there. In the
alps the zig zags are climbing up to ski resorts at 2000m (Ski resort
claim, most are lower than they say). A lot more space to fit the
bends in. If you only want a couple of hairpins then there are plenty
around.

Yup. Here in the south of Scotland the highest metalled road is only a
smidge over 730 metres. Mind you you go up from 50 metres in under 15
Km, so you get a wee bit of exercise on the way up...

I bet! enjoy Mallorca; that's also very Alpine; you will breeze up.

May I suggest you add my Ride 'Round Rhondda audax and/or Dave Lewis'
(Down with) the British the following day to your practice schedule.
These two 200km rides have climbing of 4070m and 3805m respectively.
Programs such as memory map claim they have much more climbing. Memory
map initially asserted over 5000m for RRR but I didn't believe it. My
route had fallen off the edge of the map so I instantly dropped to sea
level and shortly after jumped up several hundred metres. A more
careful application of Memory Map gives these rides around a 20%
uplift which would make them two of the hilliest rides in the Audax
calendar.
In reality they both have several majestic mountains to climb. They
achieve their climbing on long climbs and descents rather than lots of
little hills. RRR goes over 400m six times. (Down with) The British
reachs 500m. One rider from Bristol was amazed by the Bwlch, 'I
didn't know there were Alpine mountains so close.'
Unfortunately if you want to do both it is necessary to book
accomodation early some idiots moved a football match on the 13th May
to Cardiff.
