  1. Hey all,

In the OLN highlight show, Lance mentioned changing shoes just before the TdF. He complained of hip
    trouble (IIRC) as a result.

Thoughts? What model were they? Something unavailable to the pub I assume. Ones just out of the
proto shop? Nike must be a bit upset about his public griping. This on top of Tiger dropping
    their driver.

Two things: 1, I find it hard to believe shoes could cause hip trouble. Is this just more of
the post-TdF wine we've been hearing from LA this year? I'm an LA fan but, honestly, have been
a bit disappointed by his post race comments after his very nice race demeanor; 2, why would he
use anything new just before the TdF? We're all taught to do/use nothing new and untested
    before an event.

I took it more as he was berating himself for trying new shoes so close to THE event. Any
manufacturer makes shoes that work for some people and not for others. This is really a minor hiccup
for Nike compared to seeing Tiger with a Titleist 975D in his hands at the Buick! :-)

He mentioned cleat position. I was not clear on whether the shoes were changed slightly or if this
was another error of the mechanics.

BTW, after the "brake rub" incident, I did not see anyone fall on the sword, so to speak. That is
    one reason I doubt him.

Wrong cleat position can do that, especially when you ride 5+ hours a day.

Gotcha. I'll have to watch it again. Makes more sense.

I was wondering the same thing. Can you imagine being the mech who screwed something like that up?
Yikes. Was that the stage where he and Heras piled up on some flat? Possibly it got tweaked then.

If the shoe makes the lower leg misaligned, then the upper leg will try to compensate and that in
turn could put pressure on the hip.

The body is an integrated system.

On the show, Lance caught himself and made a point of saying that it wasn't the shoe, but rather a
result of not getting the cleat position dialed in correctly.

That was my thought exactly. I don't doubt the the brake was rubbing, but I think it would have
happened when he and Heras got tangled up. Also, knowing that LA is almost obsessive about his
equipment, you don't think he knows every creak, squeak and rub that ever occurs on a bike? I think
he would have noticed this when they pushed off at the start of the stage in the first place.

I don't think it was the same stage. If it was, why not say that his theory was that the onset was
from the crash? He never said that and wants credit for riding like that for the whole stage.

That mishap happened between the Galibier and the Alpe. The brake was rubbing on the Galibier and
his comments indicate he discovered it then.

Given the major braincramp stories that we hear from other top riders as well as LANCE, I think
it's quite possible that he could miss a rubbing brake pad. His mechanics are the best, after all,
so how could they make such a stupid mistake? Or maybe the pad got bumped in the peloton earlier
    in the race.

Hard to blame a mechanic without direct evidence on this one. The brake could have been knocked out
of center by many means. Who knows, maybe that was Ullrich's "secret weapon" he kept talking about.

What strikes me is that if it was rubbing, it would have appeared cockeyed
(i.e. not centered) and should have been obvious to anyone riding behind him. I find it hard to
believe that none of his teammates was riding behind him long enough not to notice (in the
    first part of the stage).

  13. No one that's ever ridden a bike more than 100 meters with a brake rubbing believed Armstrong.

Just as no one that ever swung a baseball bat as a pro believed Sosa.

LA has unlimited resources with regards to bike repair and fitting. There is no excuse for his
cleats to be maladjusted. A short ride would let him know something's wrong and it could be
adjusted. He's just sour that he actually had to earn a win this year as there was some
competition unlike some prior years. If Ullrich improves slightly and Cipo races in the Tour LA
    will stay with five wins.

What does Cipo have to do with it? If anything, it would make LANCE's job easier by taking
the pace-making load off USPS during the flat stages, and controlling the peloton during the
    early stages.

In one of the Wheat Thins races my brother pulled into the neutral pit because he thought his brake
was rubbing. The mechanic looked at it and said it wasn't rubbing and then he said, "Some days it
just feels like the brake is rubbing." He changed a wheel and sent him back out.

I have riden an entire time trial with the break rubbing, had no clue, it is the heat of
competition, if you are suffering, you kind of panic and think "pull it together", and try to
minimize your losses, you don't wip out your tools box.

As far as someone noticing the brake being cocked to one side. On their bikes the brake pad is maybe
a cm off the rim hardly a noticable angle if it shifts.

I also see no reason to believe that he would lie. From my understanding of Lances personality,
these admissions about poor planning or mental mistakes are much more unacceptable then just not
having the physical ability. If he had trained right and worked diligently but things out of his
pervue to anticipate of change effected his physical capabilities then I think he would be
disappointed but not mad at himself, However, I think he is angry with himself that he let these
little mental mistakes and misjudgements cost him time.

I forgot which interview but he said there have been lots of little things that have gone wrong be
we won't make the same mistakes next year. And he said it like: I screwed up, maybe got to laxed and
it cost me, but I have learned my lesson.

Just my opinion on the guy, but I think he is mad at himself for every little error he made, and I
would be willing to bet, this spring lance will be in a hot humid place doing time trails to see
how to best avoid dehydration. and we will see him come to the line in july in an old ass trusty
    pair of shoes.

Another thread quoted Floyd L's diary as claiming the brake rubbing was an attempt at sabotage.
