Left shifter won't shift back to low gear

You didn't say whether the inner level travels fully
or not when you try. If not, my guess is that the outer
limit screw is too far in, so that you're having to use
too much force to engage the large ring against it, and the
cable tension is preventing the shifter from working.

Fush well with the STI repair kit-WD-40 or another spray solvent, then
lube well, innards...it 'may' come back, otherwise warranty if < 2years
or replacement....might consider Campag...no break-no fix problems.

Response to original post; there are a few reasons why this might be.

if it's indexed, you might have the "clicks" set to far towards the
large side. this will not let the Mech. move far enough back to push the
chain off the large ring.

Your cable might be corroded inside the housing, causing it to stick.

The cable might be frayed (small strands broken) inside the housing,
same effect.

The derailer itself might be sticky. Despite what Shimano might want you
to believe, a spring cannot move the derailer as good as the cable.

Or a DT shifter if ya DO race...Maybe inna crit. a lever mounted
shifter would be 'essential', but in all other road racing, circuit
racing, a DT shifter is just fine, and STI/ERGO is just 'nice to have',
not essential.

The inner level won't move at all, that's the problem.
I'll have time to work on it per folks's suggestions
this week.

Changing brands or type of shifter is not an option.
I like fixing things first before "upgrading" them.
