My colleague Tom Brake MP, The former Liberal Democrat Transport Spokesman
and a regular cyclist, has echoed cyclists' concerns. He recently wrote to
the Department for Transport to confirm that these rules are solely
advisory and , if they were not observed by cyclists, would not lead to
claims of cyclists' "contributory negligence". I know from my dealing with
Sustrans and other Bristol based cycling groups that there are mixec views
on helmets and I mudy admit that whenever I use my own bike I choose not
to wear one.

The New Scientist used to (may still do) write about the amount of
people whose names related to their jobs.
e.g. When I broke my arm and wrist a few years ago, the broken bone
doctor's name was Mr Hand

A computer company I once worked for had a lot of trouble with a
secret government research centre which used our computers to simulate
the performance of secret new warplane designs. One of their new
designs kept getting shot down despite there being nothing else around
doing any shooting at the time. Because it was top secret national
security stuff the core dumps they sent us had all the secret bits
relating to the plane's performance cut out of them with scissors. We
could never find anything wrong.

So we had to visit the site to find out what was going on. Turned out
to be very simple. After takeoff, and before ramping up to its
terrific supersonic speeds, this plane fired a quick burst from its
guns just to check them out. Then the pilot opened up the engines and
ran into his own bullets from behind.

While we were there we met the nice man in charge of this secret
government research centre, Dr Nutter.

Many years ago I was asked to tender for some MoD work but declined as
what they wanted done needed the laws of physics rewriting if it was to
work - which we told them. Two years later I was contacted again and
told they were re-letting the contract and they had been specifically
told to get us to bid. I told them we had no bid then and would no bid
now because it broke the laws of physics and asked why they had bothered
asking us. The man on the phone explained that the group they had let
the contract to had got nowhere. Because we had no bid last time and
explained the problems it was clear that we understood them and the
other bidders didn't so they would like us to take over the work. We no
bid much to their disappointment! Which was a pity as it would have
been a big contract.

Got my reply tonight. I was expecting a form letter. I was pleased
that mine had (1) a grammatical error and (2) a reference to a remark
I'd made inmy letter about an occasion when we'd been at the same
function.

She also said there was a real debate going on and she'd pasedmy
letter onto the DfT and will contact me when she'sgot a response.

She's marginal Labour.
