light clicking/creaking from drivetrain when standing

You might also check inside the pedals. They can click under load if
they have ball bearings and are getting worn.

you can try dripping some light machine oil into the pedal spindle and
try to work a bit of it onto the pedal bearings- it might be enough to
cure the click and reveal the source of the problem

Check the pedals. Ride w/o cycling shoes for a bit and or change
pedals and see. Most of the 'noises' we hear are pedal, not crank,
based.

Just about every bike I've had would make this kind of noise
if I pedaled hard enough.

As Jobst Brandt has explained, the pedal-crank attachment
is poorly designed and allows the parts to move against
each other. See http://draco.acs.uci.edu/rbfaq/FAQ/8f.10.html
I can't say whether that is the source of the noise you are
hearing, but I think it is on my bikes.

Jobst's solution was to machine conical surfaces on his cranks.
I avoid the problem by climbing hills in low gears.

Stop fixing it and diagnose the problem.
(Maybe it is your shoe lace clicking on the crank)

My bicycle had a funny creak. It was synchronized with
the turning the cranks. That means it could have been
saddle or seat post creak or crank spindle attachment too.
I looked at the cranks. Nothing. Noticed that the chain
wheels were flopping a bit, and the bolts were loose.
Fixed the creak.

Almost immediately noticed a clicking sound. Intermittent
and maddening. Sometimes click, some times not. Noticed
that it almost always clicked on left turns. Eventually
found a loose spoke on the left of the rear wheel.

The impulse to _do_ something is strong. Use it too find
imaginative ways of diagnosing.

I actually placed a drop of oil on every spoke nipple last night. All
the spokes are at the correct tension.

I removed the cleats from my shoes, cleaned them, lubed the screws and
the cleats.

I removed the entire crank, unscrewed the cup bearings, cleaned
everything, wrapped Teflon tape around the threads, and reinstalled
everything, cleaned and lubed.

Hit the road this morning. Nothing for the first half hour. The
creaking is gone, but then I had a random, intermittent click. Can't
figure out what it is. Driving me nuts. Doesn't seem to happen so much
when I'm in a low gear going uphill. Seems to happen more when I'm in
the big chainring.

For the love of God, someone help me!

Did you think of the cassette as a possible cause? Put a little oil or
grease on every metal to metal interface and torque it to spec (and that
is a lot more than most people think).

Did you lubricate and torque chainring bolts?

Sounds like you need a counselor. I have never owned a bicycle (or
any mechanical device) that was completely silent. If it's just a
little "tic", then get over it; bicycle shops get rich chasing them.
Don't make a fetish out of your bicycle! They "tic" sometimes.

I hate it worse when people "beep"... there's no reason for that!

Shoelace, chainring bolt(s), pedal bearing, stiff link, or my personal
favorite, the dreaded power link tic. (Saddle rails or clamp bolt possible,
too.)

Have you considered medication?

The top idler pulley on my rear derailer can get squeaky sometimes
(rusty and scored bushing), but then it usually only squeaks while on
the big chainring.

Was out again this morning. Got caught in a monster of a rain storm
and once it stopped raining and I was thoroughly soaked, the clicking
stopped all together. I would have to imagine I had something caught
somewhere that was hitting something, but we'll see if it comes back
on the next ride.
