Lighted Helmet

That's an incredibly looking helmet. However, I would have little use for it as I seldom ride in the evenings. I'm also fortunate enough to live in an area that doesn't get too foggy during Winter mornings. Therefore, this helmet would be a bit overkill but I'm sure it would be useful to others who enjoy cycling during the evenings. There definitely seems a trends towards accessories that increase rider safety, that's a plus in my book. 🙂

I find that helmet to be retarded! Look man with the right camera exposure and computer manipulation they can make those lights on that helmet look very bright, but I can tell from the number of led's it isn't bright at all, probably not much better than reflective tape! Then you have to deal with the helmet as to whether or not it's constructed well enough to be helpful at protecting your head in an accident.

I think that helmet is another bicycle marketing con. Stay away from it.

There are tail lights made today that come with a helmet mount, find a bright one and buy it instead.

I think I have seen one last Christmas season. It was like a Christmas tree helmet with those LED lights that turn on when the bike is to stop. But I didn't know that there are such helmets. I thought that one I saw was customized like those lighted shirts with LED. My husband said that it would be best if the rider would have lights from the helmet down to his shoes so that he would be safer from reckless drivers of vehicles particularly the trucks.

It looks like that helmet is the object of a Kickstarter fundraiser. It does not appear to be an open hardware project or an open source software project. I think the helmet concept being shown is a good one, and the project is getting backers -- nearly $600,000 now. If this helmet becomes a reality, it might increase competition in that selling segment (Giro and Bell will have something to worry about?) That in turn might help lower helmet prices.

You can still place LEDs onto existing helmets. A couple of Cree 3 watt LEDs on an aluminum heat sink with a small circuit board and a lipo battery could be fitted. Of course that will add to the helmet's weight. It will add to the rider's visibility for sure. The 310 lumen headlight that is strapped on to my helmet is just one single LED and it sure does get attention even in day time. Have to be careful about choosing the battery chemistry, because Lipos are very fussy and might catch on fire if there is a crash and impact damage to the battery. So perhaps use a safer battery chemistry.

I do not know how much money is needed to farm the design out to China and get a production run done. And then distribute the helmets. The project principals appear to be Asian. They want $600,000...well...I don't have a helmet manufacturing background and don't know the costs these guys will hit. Maybe the principals are going to tell other sources of capital, "We raised $600,000 on Kickstarter, do you want to throw in $5 million?" Won't they need a few million dollars just to get a patent?

Typically, Kickstarters for gadgets promise too much to the backers, and don't deliver everything they promise to the backers. It remains to be seen if this helmet design can make a profit commercially.

Which btw reminds me that I had a knife on me when I crashed 2 weeks ago... (pocket knife, folded).

I think that most helmet manufacturers clearly say to put nothing on the helmet or under it...

Looks like an early warning device to me in a bad way. I like the idea but the way it was presented on the video it looks quite unappealing to me. If I were to make a decision base on this video I would rather not buy this helmet.

Definitely a really cool idea. I don't think I'll get one for myself as I've already got one and I'm not looking to spend too much since I've got a few big bills coming up. But, I'm definitely interested and want to learn more and see it in action in real life. I would definitely spend hours watching reviews about it on YouTube, I can see it now!

I actually think the helmet looks kind of stupid, but that doesn't make it unsafe, and that doesn't mean I wouldn't wear it. Tech keeps improving in most industries, and the cycling industry is no different. If this helmet can save a few lives or keep riders protected, then it's an absolutely good idea and good invention. It doesn't meet my design tastes, but does that really matter? Obviously not! 😉
